Good point re eremiae, Björn I have not seen the OD of Mesopicos goertae eremiae Stoneham, 1926 (Ibis not yet available on BHL, and I got rid of all my old copies during a projected house-move!) Can anybody out there help?

soumagnei For the purposes of The Key any subsequent spelling of a specific name is a variant (although it is a close-run thing here!)

The Key (see #253); This list celebrates my full recovery from obsessive Giebelitis, having just reached p. 824 of vol. III of Giebel’s, Thesaurus Ornithologiae ( 1872-1877). Seemingly full of valuable information, I was astounded by the number of typos and other errors in that work, and hope...

Erikjan Congratulations on completing your nomenclathon! A worthy task and much appreciated. I have been away (on a Billy Fury & Beatles-fest), and succumbed to Giebelitis upon my return (so some of your findings I had already foreseen). A few of the names are new (duly acknowledged) and...

Thanks Erikjan, I am treating Ctenorhynchus Agassiz as a new name, and, whilst checking podicips, find that podicipes is also new as a specific name. New also are brabournei and falklandius, with undulatum as a new gender entry. As for calli-, cali-, kali-, kalli……!

Thanks Erikjan, As you remark, mainly typos, but I am treating fulvidus (separated from fulvida by fulvidior) and gradatus (OD seen) as new, and have moved syn. Xiphidiopicus percussus to ruppelii (OD seen).

Thanks Erikjan, I am treating cyaneculus and obscurius as novelties deserving entry. The rest are either errors or gender termination differences.

Erikjan, You beat me to it - I was about to reveal that lawrentii is not in my copy. I am treating litorea, guarixa, and gymnopsis as novelties. I think intercapularis is an original spelling, but haven't yet seen the OD (Nordmann in Erman's Reise, Naturhist. Atlas, p. 13, 1835).

Erikjan, An interesting selection, especially as the first two epithets (viride, galotii) together with cyanolaima warrant new entries to The Key. Perhaps one of our aficionados may be able to find out more about Galot.

I have weakened, and now treat Saltatricola as a separate synonymous name in The Key. I am still pondering on a possible form of words for Coryphospiza.
  15. J

    BOW Key

Erikjan, No, Coryphaspiza is a different bird altogether; Sclater's succinct text indicates a lapsus for Coryphospingus (spingos and spiza both mean finch). That said, Coryphospiza and Saltatricola could be considered for separation, although I will keep them as Variants for the time being...

Erikjan, What a stupendous but much appreciated task you have set yourself. I welcome chirimontanus and eburneus as new. EDIT 1: I thought chirimontanus was new, but in fact it is a lapsus for chirimotanus. The eburneus sub-entry is a good find.

Erikjan, Another good selection. Because of its disparate spelling and treatment in a different family (Accipitridae instead of Falconidae) I have chosen to regard Ibiceter as a new name, altho’ acknowledging that it is probably a lapsus for Ibycter.

Erikjan, The numbering of Hellmayr et al., Field Mus. Nat. Hist., publication nos. (various), Cat. Birds of the Americas and the Adjacent Islands, can be confusing. The series began with Part II, No. 1, in 1918 (to take advantage of the projected completion of Ridgway’s Birds of North and...

Hellmayr has 11 parts, covered in 15 volumes (Part 1 has 4 numbers; Part 2 has 2 numbers). Peters vol. I has two editions (1931, 1979), so a full Peters (including the Comprehensive Index) has 17 volumes.
  20. J

    BOW Key

Erikjan, Hellmayr as well as Peters! Hellmayr et al. has only one less volume than Peters (nearly a bookshelf each) and the synonymies are even more extensive. Some of your findings I have treated as gender differences; brachyurae is a grammatical form (see Laurent's previous remarks); eremiae...

Erikjan An interesting little group. The diphthong in œnicaudus is not very well printed in Peters, IV, p. 55, but is visible under closer scrutiny in my copy. Erikjan, You raise an important point. GENERA should mirror the taxonomy of BOW (i.e. genera currently recognised by them). Most of the names you list were brought across unchanged from my MS (based on HBW and other references), and I have yet to review them and cross-check the associated...
