Phonescoping - shots, settings and combos

Hi Christian Good to hear of another HK-based birder. The Otterbox/Kowa has indeed worked well with my iPhone. Cheers Mike

Great stuff! - I remember being amazed to see this behaviour by one in Hong Kong many years ago. Cheers Mike

It's great that Spoonbills are breeding in the UK again Gi - such a special bird. As an extra bonus here's a dodgy sketch of first ever Spoonbills - two birds coming into breeding plumage (NB the shaggy crests, and the collar on the left hand bird) on the Kingsbridge Estuary in South Devon in...

Here's another clip of a Eurasian Spoonbill taken at Mai Po few weeks ago. Cheers Mike

Many thanks Gi. That Ring Ouzel is fabulous!

Trialling the new media function. Here's a Grey-headed Canary Flycatcher shot earlier this week at Shing Mun. And not a bird, but one I enjoyed, a Burmese Python a couple of weeks earlier near San Tin. As this looks to work pretty well I'll post some more here to show the video...

Phonescoping - shots, settings and combos

Oooh! Envy you your nightjar GiG! Here's a few Greater Painted-snipe pix I've been meaning to post for a while. One of Hong Kong's most charismatic species this pair performed beautifully at Mai Po a few weeks ago. There is also a video clip and a longer article about their role in preserving...

Here's some pix from the extra long May Day weekend of some waders from Shui Hau on Lantau in Hong Kong: 1. Greater Sandplover 2. Lesser Sandplover 3. Sharp-tailed Sandpiper 4. Red-necked Stint 5. Long-toed Stint Cheers Mike

Thanks Joker. A bit of fun for the next post. Following the lockdown birding rules I've been seeing how far away I can identify birds with my scope. My flat looks out across the water from Lantau Island all the way to downtown Hong Kong so I have a huge potential area to cover. 2.5 km out...

The Kowa adapter allows the same functionality and flexibility - I enjoyed sending out a shot of the Little Curlew (a rare spring migrant in HK, with one or two birds in most years) that absolutely made my day yesterday while I was still watching the bird. The second shot was taken with my Sony...

Impressive ingenuity GiG! Having a wife with the online skills to get a product manufactured in Japan and sold in Germany shipped to Hong Kong during the facemark frenzy was my key skill! And here's a couple of pics from Mai Po last weekend - a Nordmann's Greenshank, which was close enough to...

Love the Lapwing Gi - we don't get nearly enough of them in Hong Kong. I also envy you your American Kestrel, Joker. I'm still struggling to figure out how shifting the ISO changes the pic as I'm used to shooting with aperture priority on my main camera. Cheers Mike

Phonescoping - shots, settings and combos

Hi Joker My position is similar to yours - I'm not really a photographer, but exploring what phonescoping might allow me to achieve. My suggestion would be to be kind to yourself and your kit - by which I mean shooting in less challenging conditions so you give yourself a better likelihood of...

Phonescoping - shots, settings and combos

Another couple of pix from this weekend, which revealed that the basic settings seem to struggle with direct sunlight on the subject. The rather pearly wash on the first pic of the Wood Sandpiper reflect the difficulty of trying to darken the image and get a bit more depth to the colour. The...

Phonescoping - shots, settings and combos

That's Cooper's Hawk was obviously too young to know that humans represented a threat. It hunted around the area either from a very low perch, or actually digging into the leaf litter like a chicken literally at my feet! Cracking detail on the Wigeon's vermiculations Gi - How far away was it...

Phonescoping - shots, settings and combos

Here are three videos taken with my iPhoneX The first is a hand-held clip with the standard video function of an unbelievably tame Cooper’s Hawk at Montrose Point in Chicago on a work trip last November. https://youtu.be/5M3aKtnXW94 The second is a Water Rail phonescoped a couple of weeks ago...

Phonescoping - shots, settings and combos

Here's a few shots from my Conference Birding visit to Oakland. The California Thrasher is shot through a Swarovski ATS65 The Marbled Godwits are through my Kowa. I discovered I still have lots to learn as I found the process somewhat frustrating when dragging the scope in and out of a car...

Very cool Crag Martin shot - really flaunting those spots! Nice in habitat portrait of the Ibex too. Cheers Mike

I went for the Kowa adaptor because my phone case has a flip cover and I wondered about it being difficult to attach firmly. Now I have the hassle of switching covers, but the unit is small and can go in a pocket or round my neck on a lanyard, which reduces the chance of it dropping. Cheers Mike

Phonescoping - shots, settings and combos

As various camera threads have their own page to share shots and settings, and inspired by my recent acquisition of the Kowa/Otterbox adaptor to connect my Kowa 883 to my iPhoneX I thought I'd start one on phonescoped images, the most effective settings and the phone / scope / software...
