Tripod/head combo for Swaro ATS 65

I finally got the tripod/head combo. The VA-5 head is really very nice, really well made, it oozes quality. It weights 530 g (actually 528 g on my scale) including plate, which is quite a bit lighter than the "0,6 kg"* usually quoted online. Compared to the MH500 is tiny, and I personally think...

Tripod/head combo for Swaro ATS 65

I've finally decided to go for the Sirui M-3204X. It is on the heavy side, but I got a very good deal. Besides, I come from an utterly flimsy setup, so it will be nice to experience some stiffness and steady view for a change. I tried to get a nice price on the N2204, but to no avail (the W2204...

Tripod/head combo for Swaro ATS 65

Wow, now this is really enlightening. If the 128RC is around 770 g, then the tripod must be around the 1,5 kg. I know Gitzo are considered some of the best, but if you use the Meopta S2 (which is +1,7 kg) with a 1,5 kg scope, then I guess maybe a 1,6 - 1,7 kg is a bit overkill for the sub 1,4 kg...

Tripod/head combo for Swaro ATS 65

Bill, this is brilliant, thank you very much. It is amazing that the 128RC is usually quoted at 1 kg and the MH500 at 0,9 kg, while it seems to be the other way round. I've narrowed it down to tripods I can find reasonably easy (or get good second hand deals). A.- 190CXPRO CF 3 sections. 1,6...

Tripod/head combo for Swaro ATS 65

Thanks, Bill. Now this is interesting (and puzzling), since Manfrotto states in its website that the 128RC is 1kg and the MVH500AH is 1 kg. So many questions. Maybe over time there have been several series bearing the same name "128RC", and hence the weight disparity? Should we assume the...

Tripod/head combo for Swaro ATS 65

Thank you very much for those insights. It pretty much goes in the same direction I've been thinking about. My current setup (that I bought for the MM3ED 60) is a Vanguard Veo235 with a Velbon FHD-43M head that I bought to replace the really lousy one that originally came with the Vanguard...

Tripod/head combo for Swaro ATS 65

Yes, I've seen it quoted in Gitzo website at 460 g, which looks really very light compared to the two Manfrotto heads discussed above. This thing intrigues me: say you have decided your tripod/head combo is going to weight around 2,6 kg (for the sake of the argument). Then I guess I'd prefer a...

Tripod/head combo for Swaro ATS 65

I bump this thread in order to get more opinions and recommendation for a tripod/head combo for the ATS 65 in order to navigate the sea of infinite number of options of tripods and heads. I'm trying to narrow it down to actual specs, like the following. Weight: the scope weights 1370 g. My...

Tripod/head combo for Swaro ATS 65

Well, if a behemoth of a scope like the Meopta S2 82 suffers from reduced brightness from 46x on (at 1,78 mm EP, as you say)... it is clear that we can expect limited performance from the little ATS65. I just pulled the trigger on one, so I'll be letting you now in the coming weeks, as I get it...

Tripod/head combo for Swaro ATS 65

Bill, this is really interesting, I never thought about that in those precise terms. I've also experienced the image getting dimmer when you really squeeze all the juice from the zoom, but on a bright winter day like today I could spot a meadow pipit at 40x (with my MM3ED-60 and the SDL v2) and...

Tripod/head combo for Swaro ATS 65

I feel the same; so much generosity and good will... and patience with people who are just beginning and are full of the-same-old-questions. I used to manage a forum with +10k users and the great atmosphere that we share in BF is really remarkable (well, obviously, there's always a wrong note in...

Tripod/head combo for Swaro ATS 65

Bill, thank you ever so much for the detailed review. So much appreciated, really! When I first got the MM3ED-60 my main concern was weight and size. As it is, my scope-head-tripod combo is a around 2,5 kg/5,5 pounds, which I consider a pleasure to carry, so to speak. I use a 32x eyepiece 99 %...

Tripod/head combo for Swaro ATS 65

Bill, I wonder if you could finally test your tripod setup with the 65 Televid. I'm also interested in the subject tripod/head for smallish scopes. One of the biggest assets of the ATS 65 (or many other 60-65 for that matter) is its size and weight, so it seems logical to look for a combination...
