What did you see in your binoculars today?

In the early morning, I dropped my wife off at the Oakland airport for her to visit family, and drove straight to Arrowhead Marsh, which is on the road to the airport. My best bird was a Lincoln's Sparrow, which was perched close, and made more of a ticking sound than any sort of musical...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Had a sunny, but chilly morning walk at my local spot, which encompasses a reservoir and the surrounding hills. Not terribly birdy, but nice to get out after a week of staring at a computer screen. I took with me the 10x42 Noctivids, still a favored bin for these outings without a scope, and...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

I got out this morning, before my working from home duties became too pressing, and drove to a nearby, recently designated open space hilltop preserve, covered in mustard flowers. Among Scrub Jays, Red-winged Blackbirds, Cliff Swallows, and gangs of Lesser Goldfinches, the Lazuli Buntings were...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Yesterday, my wife and I hiked along a wooded trail on watershed land that drains towards a reservoir. Spotted Towhees were abundant, singing their one note love song, along with the raucous cries of Steller's and Scrub Jays, Woodpeckers, and the first Orange-crowned Warblers of the season with...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

I note that the tail of that Wag is discreetly hidden behind a convenient dirt clod. Nice photo! Are you using any kind of an adapter for your phone? -Bill

What did you see in your binoculars today?

I want back and studied my photos. There were 3 flickers on that tree. Here is a wider screengrab of the same photo showing 2 of them. Note the yellow shafts, red malar, plus a hint of red on the nape of the upper left bird. Intergrade! And to swing the rudder back topically, I've taken to...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Hi John, Yellow shafts, but no red crescent on the nape says intergrade to me, but I could very well be wrong. I've actually seen a fair amount of flickers with the red crescent on the nape in the last month. The message I'm hearing from local birders is simply that there are likely NO pure...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

After looking closer at a lot of the Flickers I've been seeing, I venture to say that many of them are intergrades. Here's another example. -Bill

What did you see in your binoculars today?

You are correct! I didn't even look for it. I went and looked it up here: https://ebird.org/pnw/news/northern-flicker-red-shafted-yellow-shafted-intergrades-which-do-you-have/ Thanks for pointing that out. -Bill

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Spotted? Where are the spots? ;-) Seriously, sometimes I am puzzled by the names given to creatures. I still can't get over the Ring-necked duck. Show me the ring! Its about as evident as the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. The white-collared duck, ok, but not the ring-neck. Here's what...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

For Binastro: Mercury seen from my office window, looking towards San Francisco. Clear night with lovely color gradients towards the horizon. I used a Swarovski 8x30b companion to verify, and then could spot it readily naked eye. About 8° above the horizon. Elusive little rascal. -Bill

What did you see in your binoculars today?

In between rainstorms at lunch, I'll often walk the grounds of the studio, which is a fairly manicured park-like environment in a relatively urban neighborhood. I've been carrying the Nikon MHG 8x30's on these walks. Yesterday I was rewarded with a view of a Black-throated Grey Warbler foraging...
