    I once had a pair come to inspect a maple tree on my property. They rejected it, and I never saw them again.

    My only visit to Texas was before I got more serious about birding, and I had no optics with me. The Scissor-tailed Flycatchers Tyrannus forficatus made the biggest impression on me. As I recall, they would gather on the local wires around dusk.

    Milvus milvus appears to be a magnificent bird, I wish we had them here. I guess the Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) is about as close as we can come.

    Hooded Mergansers are a lot of fun to watch. I really like the way they bob up like corks from a dive.

    That may because you are more interested in the birds than accumulating “points”. I share your priorities. I would much rather have watched a great blue heron capture a huge bullfrog than brood about never having seen a Purple-rumped Gadabout.

    I had to look up to see what an E190 is. Airplanes are almost as much fun as birds, and much easier to find some of the time.

    Titmice are funny. We used to watch them tuck seeds away in wreaths that we hung on a railing outside. I don’t know if they ever came back to get any of those seeds.

    Your binoculars may turn out to be one of the most wonderful things you own. Living birds are among the most wonderful things we can use them on. Enjoy.

    I once saw one catch an enormous bullfrog, but it stalked off into the puckerbrush near the pond, and I didn’t get to watch it go down. I also believe I saw one eat a small muskrat. Again, it was pretty well concealed, but I knew there was a muskrat hole there. It stood there a very long time...

    I gather that in this instance “NV” does not mean night vision.

    I am partial to Cedar Waxwings, and love to watch them hawking insects over a pond. They are beautiful birds.

    I have seen hawks snatch at a bird that was harassing them, but only once when they were carrying a meal. I once saw a hawk drop a snake while being harried.

    Starlings are a bit of a nuisance here. We have Grackles, which show nice iridescence too.
