    Desert Owls unguided?

The elusive OH Buzzards are meant to be just north of the border crossing immediately next to the IBRCE, but yep I've potentially dipped these twice on previous trips - just not achieved good enough views in those flippin plantations. Desert Finch is another that continues to elude me. Anyway...

4 Oriental Honey Buzzards still near IBRCE.

    Desert Owls unguided?

Yeruham Lake, (as I think you already know from Ben MacDonalds excellent report) is the only place I can find, but it is thought they may be extinct. On Tarsiger.com there is a photo of a Swamphen thought to show some signs of African Swamphen from there from 23 November 2017.. I certainly...

    Desert Owls unguided?

Wow, that must be so satisfying hearing those owls................its what true birding is really about. Respect to you Jan! So pleased the sites I passed on were fruitful, there are never any guarantees but that's what makes birding so superb.:t:

    Desert Owls unguided?

Yeah I believe so. I tend to fly to Tel Aviv and drive to Dead Sea area and then onward to Eilat. The new Eilat Airport was due to open this year but it’s opening just seems to get pushed back and back.

    Desert Owls unguided?

Last February they were the most common sandgrouse species on the plains just south of, but within a mile of the 3 black hills of shale that appear on your right as you drive in to Ovda from Route 12 (the road to Ovda north of the airport). I had small groups of Spotted quite easily as well as a...

    Desert Owls unguided?

I agree about the confusion around the Nubian nightjar territory within the Kibbutz at Ne’ot Hakkikar. Getting into the village isn’t tough, but it’s finding the birds even with a spotlight that may be hard at this time of year as they will not be displaying actively. There are lots of tracks...

    Desert Owls unguided?

I might be wrong but I think Nubian Nightjars are there all year. Last year, a guide showed me one with some difficulty, around 10 Feb.

    Desert Owls unguided?

I think there are meant to be about just 8 Leopards left in Israel though that may not be up to date. They may be extinct in the Country. Striped Hyena's are rare too, but there must be gen about them. I read one report where a hyena had been incorporated into a wolf-pack in Israel, and...

    Desert Owls unguided?

I am a bit of a wuss these days, I think it comes with age. Not so bad if you are with other people. I’m very grateful for your thread BTW. I’m desperate to see these owls.

    Desert Owls unguided?

Has the tiny population of Leopards at Ein Gedi now expired? I know it was virtually extinct back in 2005. Also around that time a German traveller was killed by hyenas in a Dead Sea wadi. Walking 'alone' at night in Wadi Mishmar or Wadi Ze-Elim trying to find owls doesn't sound very...

    Desert Owls unguided?

I have been 3 times in Israel as an independent birder and have paid £180 3 times to see Sooty falcon, and Nubian Nightjar (took 2 times to see them). As a 56 year old single birder, I must admit to having some trepidation about birding by myself in rough wadi's in a car at night. There are...
