Great stuff, Mike! Pickings have been pretty slim here so far. I keep hoping to make it back to HK for a couple of days of birding once travel restrictions ease off. Thailand and Vietnam were also on my list. Getting back into the Mainland is the big stumbling block right now.

That one must have had a case of it's eyes being bigger than what it could lift. It looks like whatever it briefly snagged almost rolled him completely over! Good flying skills to have recovered from that one!

Its a good thing to take the time to just appreciate the common blessings around us. TFS

Great to hear what is up with you, Mike. Hopefully the ability to get out and access our favorite patches will continue to improve for us all. Maybe by the fall migration things will be back to normal again.

Hopefully, Mike. I do know where to look. It is not surprisingly in a rather out of the way area.

Thanks, Mike, for sharing this example of how some positive progress is being made.

Great stuff, Mike. For some reason, although I am supposed to be following you I only intermittently get any email notifications. I'll just have to keep checking in on you regularly I guess.

At least I don't have to contend with fire ants in the North-East of China! Snakes, mosquitoes and village dogs are mostly it up here. Take care of your battle wound so you can get back out there again soon.

Getting that kind of depth of field with F5 is interesting in itself. What kind of camera & lens are you using again? I know you have mentioned quite some time back, but not being a brand or model chauvinist I didn't pay enough attention to remember. It impresses me as being a processor along...

Some really nice BIF shots there Mike! Tom is correct, that had to be a quite high F stop to get that depth of focus.

Sounds like an enjoyable day, Mike. I think I may have missed on a lifer awhile back. I had one of my bust days with not really finding anything interesting except for several somethings making a buzzy call deep down in the 2 meter plus tall reeds. MRW are not usually found, or at least...

Alas, Jos, it looks like, once again, I will have to forego my longed for winter trip to HK, . . . or Thailand . . . or Vietnam . . . or even Costa Rica! Even Hawaii is problematic! Great to at least imagine through your reports, Mike.

I was curious also, Mike. Do you happen to know of how to report any bands spotted in this part of the world? I photographed a flagged Canada Goose while I was in the US and it was easy to find the online site to report them there. Even got a nice reply giving me the information they had on...

Fantastic day, Mike! That first paragraph alone would have made for a banner day here for me!

The in flights are looking good! I also love the C. Sandpiper on the ropes.

Great to hear from you again, Mike. Looking forward to getting back to DongBei for the migration this fall!

I would like to add my two cents worth and say this is absolutely true! In my own case I have often used the ID forum as a learning tool and to train myself in making better IDs. It is especially helpful when an explanation is given as to the why and how of making the ID. Even being told...

That is about the best view that I ever get of the MRW. I've also found that the matted down vegetation isn't always firm under foot! Never went in that deep though and at least I am wearing waterproof ankle hiking boots. I'll give you a shout via PM when I start actually planning for Hong...

Hi Mike, Reliable birdy winter viewing - That decides it, I'm going to make another Hong Kong trip a priority. I already have my ticket for a trip back to the US in April for several months, so Hong Kong will have to wait until 2020. Probably December or January since birding is at its...

You're on a roll, Mike! An wonderful trip to Japan immediately followed by a great day back home in Hong Kong! This thread is now tempting me to make my second trip to Hong Kong, this time with birding being the primary focus. Note to self: This time try not to visit during a typhoon. Maybe...

Interesting coincidence in that on the same day I had my first true total shutout. 45 minutes or so and about 2 kilometers with a total zero. Not even the ubiquitous Magpie or Sparrows. Merry Christmas and may you have good weather and plentiful birds in the new year! :t:

Hi Mike, Your duck does look like a female Greater Scaup to my eyes. That bill is definitively different and the eye looks darker. Also doesn't have the darker front to the face. Looks to be a good match with this: https://ebird.org/species/gresca I've only ever gotten a few migrating...
