There's an accepted record from April 1999, seen while I was birding on the roof of the Bedson Building at Newcastle Uni :t: cheers martin

No reason there shouldn't be White Wagtail amongst them, although Pied is much more likely. I found White Wag on the beach in the summer/autumn when I lived in Tynemouth in the late 1990's, and I'm aware of two mixed White/Pied pairs, and one 'pure' pair of White Wagtails breeding in...

Northumberland Pelagics 2014 Northumberland Pelagics (in association with the Northumberland & Tyneside Bird Club) We're nearing the end of our 4hr evening trips for 2014, but we've got a couple of 10hr pelagics out to the Farne Deeps (12th and 28th August, 08:00, £70/person), searching the...

Well said Steve :t: It seems that the breeding locations of Schedule 1 species are cheerfully publicised by the inexperienced, the foolish or the simply clueless though. I know that mods/admin edit posts to remove locations of Schedule 1 species during the breeding season when they're made...

Caught up with a long sought after bird for my Northumberland list yesterday - Woodchat Shrike B (: #311 for my county life list, and #175 for my Northumberland year list. cheers martin

Excellent couple of hours in the dreadful weather this afternoon. First I went to Cresswell, only to discover that the Great White Egret had been chased by a Grey Heron and had flown off north into the rain and heavy mist. Next stop was Druridge Pools and the Spoonbill was still on the Budge...

Not as breeding birds. All four (Great, Arctic, Pom and Long-tailed) are possible when seawatching (late-August through to mid-October, in the right conditions). We've recorded all four on pelagic trips off Northumberland too, although they've been a bit thin on the ground for the last few...

Not just a rumour, although my understanding is that nesting rafts will be provided so that the birds have an alternative. cheers martin

Not sure if the Ibis is still there. Lynemouth Flash is the flooded field north of the bridge over the Lyne Burn, just after you pass the entrance to the traveller site. cheers martin

I did, I feel the decision reached is the correct one...and I still think it was an SBC :-) cheers martin

Seal and Seaduck Special Having an enforced few weeks in the office following surgery on my shoulder got me thinking that it's time we had another winter pelagic from Seahouses :t: So, I've got a boat booked for Saturday 7th December sailing at 10:00. £35/person and our target species are Grey...

There were 2-3 BND near the Farnes on Wednesday, so no reason that you wouldn't have seen them. cheers martin

I've got it in the back of my mind (with apologies to Colin if I'm misremembering) that he also discovered Gyrfalcon and Snowy Owl breeding in Upper Teesdale. Personally, I've never found anything more exciting than Osprey and Goshawk up there... I was at a talk about Pine Martens, given by...

Take a flask and sandwiches, have a picnic in the car park near the Hawsen Burn :t: Red Grouse and Whinchat both possible on the lower slopes of the hillside opposite the car park as you face away from the river. A couple of months ago Ring Ouzel were fairly straightforward from there too as...

'alleged high tide'? Next you'll be claiming that there's no such thing as climate change... As you've recently claimed that you don't visit NWT reserves, are you getting your info re water levels from other birders?

Definitely land on Inner Farne :t: even if you don't connect with the Bridled Tern, it'll still be an outstanding experience. You'll find that local birders up here are very friendly and willing to give advice - with the odd exception on BF who you've probably already spotted ;) cheers martin

Planting started in 1971. 76ha of mixed woodland (although predominantly Shore Pine, as it was considered the most suitable species for stabilising former colliery sites). There are some well-surfaced paths, interpretation boards, boardwalk and dipping platform, picnic benches, seats...

    Northumbrian Birding

These are very obviously all Willow Tit. Nice to see images that leave no doubt :t: As to whether or not there's been an influx...who knows? I'm not sure what the species movements are like. With a species in decline, and very localised, they could be in an area without being regularly...

Looks like a Rook (in fact, on reflection, looks even more like a Common Buzzard). Doesn't have either the long narrow wings, or diamond shaped tail of Raven. cheers martin

Satellite tagging of Gannets at Bempton in 2010 and 2011 seems to show that during the chick-rearing period they don't get further north than Teesside. It's thought that the Gannets from the Bass Rock range further than Gannets from Bempton because of increased intraspecific competition in the...

Thank you Gill B (: You've never seen Black Grouse? A major omission on your list :eek!: This time of year isn't ideal, although mid-late August in the North Pennines, I've found them mixed in with some very highly-strung coveys of Red Grouse. cheers martin

June, my concern is that you have previously written about flying 'really low' over the rock, and I'm struggling to see how that description fits with not causing disturbance. Flying a light aircraft 'really low' over a breeding seabird colony is irresponsible at best. martin
