Jesmond Dene The Water Rail was still in Jesmond Dene this morning. It was making its way downstream, keeping to the Jesmond bank, from Two Bridges towards the Fisherman's Lodge. It's been seen regularly since the beginning of December, but is not easy to find. I often walk through the Dene...

Please help save the Newcastle Countryside Rangers As you may know, Newcastle City Council propose to reduce the Countryside Ranger team from 8 to 4. The Volunteer Rangers have created an E-Petition on the Council web site asking the Council to reconsider. We believe that the Council's...

Spring is here Walking through Jesmond Dene this morning, I heard my first Chiffchaff of the year, next to the newly refurbished Pets' Corner. Last year it was into April before I heard one in the Dene.

Waxwings in Jesmond Dene At 8:30 this morning, there were 9 Waxwings on Coleman's Field near the new Visitor Centre in Jesmond Dene. Apparently there were about 30 there yesterday, when I was at Druridge Bay, so there are probably more than the 9 that I counted this morning.

Atlas opportunity Hi Gill, If you want to contribute to the new Bird Atlas, you could register on the BTO Bird Atlas web site and record your Bramblings as a "Roving Record". Druridge Bay Country Park Visitors' Centre is in tetrad NZ29U, as is the southern part of the lake and most of East...

Siskins in Newcastle Lots in the Newcastle area as well. I've only got 6 ports on my nyger feeder, and there always seems to be a queue of Siskins. I've been getting ones and twos since Christmas but it's really built up in the last two weeks, the Goldfinches don't look get a look in...

Waxwings in Jesmond Dene Flock of 26 Waxwing by the Pavilion next to the Picnic Field at 9:30 this morning. They were unhelpful enough to fly off while I was taking a note so I don't have a clue which way they went :C. The last time I saw a flock this size in the Dene was in 2003, slightly...

Jesmond Dene Sorry Brian, I did not notice this bit about hawfinches until a friend pointed it out. I sometimes used see a birder in the Dene who had seen them but this was back in the early '90s I think. I have kept records of my sightings since 1994 and Hawfinch is not among them.:C The...

I think you are talking about Hemscott Hill Farm. In that case there is a footpath going through the farmyard, past the pond and across the fields to to Houndalee Farm on the A1068. It's very muddy, don't try it without wellies! There's not much cover so it's very easy to put all the birds...

Jesmond Dene I was walking through the Dene this morning and saw a Little Grebe on the stretch upstream from Fisherman's Lodge. While I was watching, a female Goosander landed for a few minutes before taking off and heading south. Not rare birds, but certainly not common on the Ouseburn.

Waxwings I was out doing a TTV for the bird atlas this morning around the village of Tritlington. There were 15 Waxwings feeding on hawthorn berries next to the public footpath from Tritlington to Ulgham. The details are in this post. The Ashington ones are probably more accessible.

Swallow Pond Spent part of the morning at Swallow Pond looking for the Pallas's Warbler. It's meant to sound Willow Warblerish and we did hear a Willow Warbler type song. Having come back and found a recording of the Pallas's Warbler on the Internet, I can now proudly claim my first Willow...

Goosander in Jesmond Dene Female Goosander on the Ouseburn this morning, between Echo Bridge and Pets' Corner. I've since heard from Leee that he saw it there yesterday so who knows, it might hang around for a few more days. More controversially, I also saw what appeared to be a juvenile...

It's raining chiffchaffs There must have been a lot of Chiffchaffs come in this week. On Monday I struggled to find one down Jesmond Dene. Today, doing an Atlas tetrad through the woods between Ellington and Lynemouth, the place was dripping Chiffchaffs. I got fifteen in a 2 hour period.:-O...

Woodhorn cranes I managed to take this just before 11:00 this morning but the wind was terrific. It was blowing parallel with the hedge so there was no shelter there. It even managed to blow my scope over and that is without the tripod legs being extended. I should have dropped in to ASDA...

Jesmond Dene I’m just back from a walk round Jesmond Dene, Armstrong Park and Heaton Park in Newcastle with Allan. The highlight was a pair of Goosander on the Ouseburn just south of Two Bridges. This is an uncommon bird for the Dene, appearing in my records maybe one year in three. One was...

No signs of Lesser Celandine in Jesmond Dene yet. The leaves are visible but I could not find any flowers. Did you know that you can record the date of your Morpeth Lesser Celandine on the Nature's Calendar site (and a lot of other dates too as the year progresses)? We did manage to see...

Gill, Lovely sight aren't they. Did they pose for you or was it a 'flash of blue' job? Did you find any dippers? There's often one or two of those around, although they tend to disappear when the water's high. Mike
