Good to hear that numbers are picking up again. I can remember a peak count of around a dozen from the hide when I did a couple of NT Working Holidays at Wallington back in 2005/6

Gordon, ref the Little Gull, you were definitely unlucky as it was very active when I left at about 5.20 pm - didn't have much peace from the BHGs which were mobbing it constantly whenever it took to the air....

Waxwings et al 9 left at St Bart's this morning just before 10.00 am so it looks as if the flock is dispersing and moving on. A few Redwings around at the Rising Sun. Sadly the hide at Holywell has been vandalised yet again - for the second time since Christmas. A key has been been broken off...

Did the safari with the Forestry commission on Sunday which was great - good views of the local Peregrines as well - a major worry for the chicks when they do eventually fledge. Anyone going in the evening is STRONGLY advised to take their Midge repellant!

There is a hide in the East Woods. Three years ago it was probably THE best place in the north of England to see Red Squirrels. I think that my peak count was something like eleven! My bird list there has included Treecreepers, Jay, Sparrowhawk, Nuthatch etc etc. It's a cracking spot and well...

Tony, the A197 to the north runs past the pond = there is a footpath (I think) but parking is hazardous. the minor road to the south is much more pleasant and you can observe the pond through gaps in the hedgerow. Beehive Flash .. no sign of the Greenshank by 3.15pm BUT a single Snipe and Dunlin, several Lapwings, a solitary Redshank, plus a flyover by half a dozen swallows as well as overhead Skylarks made the dash worthwhile! JF

Chris, You'll get loads of good suggestions, but one others might not think of is: a visit to Wallington Hall - a nearby NT property. Worth visiting in itself, but especially because its wildlife hide (about half a mile from the hall - signposted through the East woods, has a great feeding...
