    Northumbrian Birding

Hi to anyone still checking this thread ! I had a Slavonian grebe on Widdrington Lake last weekend, associating with a Great crested Grebe and a Merlin hunting in Druridge dunes. Some consolation for missing the LB Dowitcher again. Also, 70 or so Brambling at in beeches right next to Brizlee...

£8.50 plus postage from the guys at Angleps https://www.angleps.com/pheromones.php You'll need PH23. It doesn't look like anything, just a stub of rubber! I keep mine in one of the little net bags used for holding washing tablets. This way you don't contaminate your hands with the scent. Once...

Yes we lured 3 or 4 with an Emperor Moth pheromone. It's the best way to see them otherwise you're thrashing round across miles of moorland in the hope you happen upon one. The lures can be kept in your freezer for a 4 or 5 years so keep them fresh. First half of May can be the better month if...

As this thread has died a death since early March I'll try and kick off the spring sightings in our county. While looking for Emperor Moths on the moorland either side of the Brizlee Wood road to the radar station (on Alnwick Moor) we saw a nice selection of birds: Raven Common Buzzard x 2 Red...

First Cuckoo of the year near the car park at Lordenshaws, Simonside on Sunday. This was my 'Little Bittern alternative' when this bird decided to vanish - I couldn't get up on Saturday. Druridge Bay on Monday - missed the Wood Sands but caught up with Glossy Ibis, Garganey and some nice Summer...

Had one of each in my suburban Gosforth garden at the weekend. Only the second Fieldfare ever for my garden, the first appearing in the really bad winter a few years ago and the first ever Redwing.

Wallington Hall (again) with the family on Sunday produced 3 Hawfinch (as you're looking at the white horse in the water feature in the Walled Garden look up to the beech trees behind - 2 here) and 1 in a tall tree next to the boat house at the boating lake, not far from the house. Also Marsh...

Wallington Hall on Sunday produced a new bird for me at this site Willow Tit seen in a hedgerow near to the start of the Riverside Walk. It was calling in classic fashion - Chick, chick, dee, dee, dee ! Also the usual Marsh Tit and 3 Bramblings at the Wildlife Hide feeding station and 7...

Correct - no reply at all. It may be time to send a delegation to the AGM to directly address the issue.

Happy new year to all Northumberland birders. Let's see a few more posts and chat here in 2018. Stag Rocks on Sunday had a Great Northern Diver, Red throated Diver x 3/4, Slavonian Grebe x 1, Purple Sandpiper x 2, Long-tailed Duck x 8, Shag x 10, Common Scoter x 20 but the highlight was at...

Hi Alan I've emailed the Trust to see if they have any comment and I have referred them to your very informative post. To give some context, Duncan Hutt replied to an email I sent to him and Steve Lister in 2008 about the high levels with this: "I accept that the outfall channel is in need of...

Jimmy Steele Just heard the very sad news that Jimmy Steele has passed away. I'm sure many of you will have come across him, particularly on his Newbiggin patch where he found many rarities. A lovely guy and a brilliant birder. Jimmy was so generous with his incredible birding knowledge and...

I had 5 Hawfinch at the National Trust's Wallington Hall on Sunday. There were seen in flight and then sitting in the tops of large beech trees close to the entrance to the walled garden (lake entrance). They flew off in the direction of the main house but I couldn't refind them. This isn't a...

Spotted Flycatcher in small Hawthorns next to the wooden bridge at Long Nanny Burn mouth yesterday. Stag Rock was pretty quiet in the morning although there was some fantastic Gannet feeding going on. No sign of the reported Surf Scoter from a day or two ago.

If Ruddies turned up unaided once and then bred and spread then there's no reason to think they won't do it again. I doubt if individuals like this have a 'contract' out on them so assume that larger groups would be targeted again if they ever grew in number. There'll be a few folk who need...

Ruddy Duck This thread has died a death somewhat (coinciding with a dearth of scarce birds in the NE?) so here's something to debate... Birdguides reporting a RUDDY DUCK on Bothal Pond. Could be a genuine migrant for those of you who aren't old enough to have seen these on many ponds in the...

Black-throated Thrush being reported by Birdguides at Prestwick Carr today. The bird was seen near the sentry box (close to where the G. G Shrike's been) then flew towards Ponteland golf course. Just what we need - another sneaky Thrush to lead us all on a merry dance!

There were 20 or so Waxwings on Sat and Sun on Salter's Road in Gosforth in tree tops beside the open field next to Princes Meadow estate. Also close-up views of Kingfisher (in front of hide for over an hour on Sun) and great flight views of Bittern at Gosforth Park NR. Also Grey Wag...

This used to be such a good site for migrants but I suspect a lack of people watching and the fact it's so overgrown now makes it much harder to pick birds up. I must try harder and visit from time to time.

Considering we've had the best NE Autumn birding ever, this thread is so, so quiet so I'm going to talk about the stunning Sibe Accentor at the weekend. Point blank views rewarding the patience of a large group of birders who didn't panic when it didn't show for a while. At one point there was a...

Had your female Bluethroat yesterday (at Chare Ends) very close to the Western Subalpine Warbler - both showing really well. Got the Dotterel off the Crooked Lonnen too which was distant in heat haze. Really good Spring birding day on the Island but no commoner migrants left at all which was odd.
