The Dowitchers flew right overhead as I was leaving, which was nice. ps: well done to the finders, they deserve something after a weeks worth of effort in less than favourable conditions this week.

Ah yes, the UK400 rules as suspected.

I've forgotten how entertaining BF can be - they've all come out of the woodwork for that thread. The best quote for me is the one whose says Garry should have saved some of his twitching budget and bought a new stair carpet. Priceless. I see Garry's 500th British Bird was the Indian House...

People that are obsessed with their end total. Rocking up to birds that others have found, waiting for it to show before ticking it and moving onto the next. People who aren't always sufficiently clued up on what it is they're looking at. Ticking birds that aren't classed as full species...

I went for it this evening and dipped by 10 minutes or so. Last seen (we think) flying off strongly North from Bellasis Bridge nr Blagdon. Its blinged up with a ring and a tracking aerial on it's back - from the latest UK scheme perhaps? I can't say I was too disappointed (was more bothered...

Snide Comments For clarification the comment referred to above is: ''What's a Honey Buzzard doing on the Northumberland coast after persistant Westerlies. In fact, on second thoughts, lets not go there.'' Just to clarify that the comment was an attempt (a failed one it seems?) at...

We could be here a while :) Organised flushes allow birders to see birds that have travelled long distances, often way off their expected course, and are tired and should ideally be given time to rest, feed and recover. The alternative would be for everyone to do their own thing and that would...

Personally I can't see whats 'great' about someone pressing 'play' on a cd player to tape lure a bird - whether we're in the breeding season or otherwise? Keeping a safe distance, applying some basic fieldcraft, and waiting patiently for the bird to reveal itself naturally - that would...

Great news Alan. That's Saturday's plans sorted then - Cresswell it is. As for next year - anyone got a mechanical digger I can borrow?

Cresswell Pond this evening (6:30 til just before 8): White-rumped Sandpiper - still at the North end; Curlew Sandpiper - as above; Common Sandpiper - as above; Whimbrel - heard; Snipe & Dunlin - lots....all over the place; And a Hobby that flew in, temporarily flushed everything and perched...

They gave that empty promise last year as well and nothing happened. I don't even bother visiting Cresswell & East Chev these days - pointless. I'm all for a petitiion as those pools have great potential and its going to waste. Failing that, gather a posse with spades and we'll dig out that...

Kids keep breaking in etc hence the patch up repairs some of its regulars have carried out. Personally I'd have them tried and executed - the kids, not the regulars.

Village Weaver? Another introduced/from escapee species that I think gets reported around the Algarve.

I concur (see above) - Golden Bishop. Was surprised to see it isn't in Collins mind - thought they were in but just checked and it seems they're not.

You're at wrong end of the med for BH Bunting - they're restricted to the Eastern side. What about Golden Bishop? They're an introduced species but they're very yellow with a black face. I think they're in the Algarve -parks and wetlands and stuff? ps: Here's a BH Bunting from Turkey a...

Plenty of Woodchat Shrikes in the likes of Spain, Greece, Turkey, etc - unmissable in fact. And much more satisfying finding them & enjoying them in solitude.

Its when they flash their lights on and off that you have to watch for. My advice is to clench........then leg it.

I'm not doubting that it was seen headed South - more that it probably explains why it wasn't picked up again when folks headed North of the visitors centre :)

Agreed. Although it came up on the pager later on as headed High and South?? Last time I saw it was headed over our heads Northwards towards Backworth/Beehive/St Marys etc - the opposite of South? Did you manage any photos Martin?

When I went past yesterday (twice) cars were parked on the road literally where the bird was - blocking a whole lane. Too lazy to park at the nearest verge and walk I guess.

Just to clarify, my posting above wasn't aimed at Keith. I know the the birders who chose to park a car in an entire lane of a rather road....does a single brown bird matter that much, by the way??? .....nee wonder we get a bad name. Wonder how many people mention 'narrowly missing a couple...
