Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

Possibly IBIS is more targeted at video with a slight crop, for news shooters etc. Perhaps Nikon will make cheaper "APS-Z" cameras. But will they sell any? Maybe the market just isn't there. The D500 would definitely be worth an update. Battery life for ever and OVF are nice things to have.

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

Interesting to see that Nikon is putting a lot of work on IBIS & video in the D6 (if the rumor is true). Maybe it will live longer than expected. Perhaps even the D500 will survive for another generation.

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

It think that the "Mirrorless reinvented" slogan was pretty spot on with the Nikon 1 system in mind. Canon joining the mirrorless FF game. https://www.canonrumors.com/here-are-the-first-images-and-specifications-for-the-canon-eos-r-and-the-new-rf-mount-lenses/ And Panasonic later this month...

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

There was a time when the average photo journalist struggled with a couple of D2x or D3s etc. Nowadays full-size bodies like the D5 has become more of a special tool for action (sports, wildlife) using mostly long lenses. The benefit for telephoto lenses with the Z-mount might not be enough to...

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

The 35/1.8 S-line looks very sharp over most of the image area even at f1.8 in the sample shots. According to the specs it's made of magnesium alloy. At twice the price of the standard plasticky 35/f1.8 and half price of the pro AF-S 35/f1.4 ED it's definitely not cheap, but it seems that it...

Steve Perry on the Z7/Z6 (based on specs + other users experience), "Z:s not optimal for wildlife, currently a D7500 would be more suitable". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMTtAi5oPoo Valid points of course, but it will depend on your special application and shooting style. The fact that...

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

I would wait until production models are tested by reliable reviewers until drawing to much conclusions on performance. Current firmware tested was 0.51 according to Dpreview. These Z cameras might not be the primary choice for action/sports today. But a lot of things can happen in the final and...

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

The "good news" is that the Z-mount have 4 "latches" (instead of 3 in the F mount) so the mount should be less prone to play and stronger. But if using the FTZ adapter + a TC we still have 2 "rattling" F mount points. A very good reason for having both long lenses and TC:s in the Z-mount. With...

The AF might work fine with the adapter but it's not a pretty solution. At least it looks as the adapter has the gasket/weather sealing. https://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/images1/ftz/back-angled.jpg Just wonder if there will be any pure Z-mount tele lenses. It will depend on if the cameras...

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

It's a neat little product segmentation trick. Only 1 card slot is another. Nikon want to sell their DSLR:s as well. Z6 and Z7 look like nice cams but for wildlife/action/sports, I don't see them as the first choice. Maybe there will be a Z500 or Z5 in the future with bigger grip, battery...

Probably need a battery grip to make the Z cams comfy to hold. D500...

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

Nikon marketing is definitely warping into a new dimension here. Leica's 3D claim for the Noctivid seems quite modest in comparison. The mount looks really big on the comparison photos. Edge sharpness will probably be as good as MFT with those new lenses. Lightyears more expensive though...

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

Unfortunately the press release says: "next-generation full-frame (Nikon FX-format) mirrorless camera and NIKKOR lenses featuring a new mount." Nikon have always been arguing very firmly that a "Full Frame" 24x36mm sensor is enough for everything... But possibly it will be easier for Nikon to...

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

The only USP for a Nikon mirrorless camera at that size, would be a larger sensor. If the rumors are correct and the bayonet is 65mm, it's possible. Fuji film GFX bayonet diameter is 65mm (internet spec) and the Hasselblad X1D diameter is 61mm. Medium format (or close to) would make the Nikon...

Sigma are in the middle of redesigning their entire lens line to art- and sports-versions for standard flat sensors, so they are probably the last that wants curved sensors to complicate things. Sony tells us that Ca/Ni will go mirrorless full frame within a year...

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

It would say that it depends on how large you print and at what ISO you shoot. A modern 1'' sensor will give about the same IQ as a 10 year old D300. But you still need fast and large lenses for maximal resolution. Up to ISO400 I loved the IQ from the D300 but above it was far from usable in...

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

Nice shots at ISO6400. 1/5000th sec is probably on the safe side, the portrait at 1/2500 is definitely safe for motion blur but with the D5, high ISO is no worries.:t:

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

Is there an emphasis? :smoke: My feeling is that the use of DX is increasing since the IQ is often good enough even at higher ISO (D500). FF still is useful when you can get closer to the subject. From a hide etc. Sometimes it can be nice to be able to "Zoom out" a prime lens switching to FF...

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

Panasonic claims 6.5 stops with DualIS in the Lumix G9 up to 280mm eqv. focal length. 6.5 stops seem to be the limit of what is possible in theory is my impression. Sony IBIS is clearly behind Pana and Olympus. Latest Nikon VR lenses I think is 4.5 stops now. In my world, 4.5 stops is plenty...

Nikon FF (and DX) Mirrorless rumours/ announcements

Did you see any rumors on nikon IBIS? I'm not sure they will do it, at least not in FF bodies. ISO performance is good enough, VR in lens is enough. MFT cameras is more in need of IBIS. And maybe mostly important for video. But we'll see in April...
