    Goa Winter 2017 - 2018

When I was at Baga fields on 30th January I took the opportunity to get some shots on my phone of the new housing that's going up. These are what I got, along with latitude and longitude of each shot to give an indication of location when used in conjunction with Google Earth. When I looked at...

    Goa Winter 2017 - 2018

Disappointed today to find that progress is encroaching further onto the Verna Plateau. When I was last there two years ago, it was pretty much as it had been. A quiet single carriageway tarmac road with no traffic, because it led to nowhere before turning into a dirt track. We parked on the...

    Goa Winter 2017 - 2018

I’d normally give it a couple of visits on a trip, but after the other day I’m just not motivated to take the taxi ride. Fort Aguada is much closer for me and it is bursting with birds, although they are woodland and scrub species rather than the grassland and farmland species of Baga Fields...

    Goa Winter 2017 - 2018

We spent the morning at Fort Aguada. It was excellent after the crowds and mayhem of last Friday’s public holiday. Juvenile grey-bellied cuckoo, three brown capped pygmy woodpeckers, a female black-winged cuckooshrike were amongst the stars, plus puff-throated babbler, brown-cheeked fulveta...

    Goa Winter 2017 - 2018

I visited Baga Fields this morning, being dropped off at Baga bridge to access the area from the track south of the bridge.. When I first went there three years ago the path was being upgraded into a full width dirt road to access the new water treatment plant that had just started...

    Goa Winter 2017 - 2018

The photo of the reported imperial eagle consists only of the profile of the head of the bird as it sat on the ground with its body obscured from the neck down by vegetation. Doubt has been cast as to the identity.

Yellow bittern and painted snipe from the tower at Carambolim this morning. Well done Lloyd Fernandes who spotted them both.

    Goa Winter 2017 - 2018

Oops. Edit. We’re off to Socorro tomorrow. I’ll keep my eyes to the sky. No eagles at all today at Carambolim, just kites, marsh harriers, an osprey and a shikra chasing a golden oriole. And a whacking great mugger crocodile that swam past us on the surface about 40 yards out not long after we...

    Goa Winter 2017 - 2018

I finally caught up with the Oriental Scops Owls at Marinha Dourada today after dipping them in 2016. Thanks to John and Sandra who told me they were still there and to Lloyd for allowing me the time for a quick pop-in to look for them on the way back from Morjim/Siolim.

Thanks Jeanie. I'll be looking out for them

    Goa Winter 2017 - 2018

We weren't staying there Jeanie, so I'm not familiar with the various uses. The breakfast area might well have been it. We got there by coming into the hotel grounds from the main access, walking along to turn left at the swimming pool, then alongside the swimming pool to turn left again into a...

    Goa Winter 2017 - 2018

I'll be out there in a couple of weeks and I missed out on the Scops Owls at the Marinha Dourada on three visits when I was last there two years ago, even though they were reported on other days. when i was elsewhere. Maybe you could look in the bamboos next to the Barbecue pit and let us know...

    Goa Winter 2017 - 2018

The area I meant at Fort Aguada was right up on top of the hill around the fort itself. Open woodland and some bare areas. Mr Kamat who did the boat tours died in 2016, but they are still operating. I'm booked on one next month.

    Goa Winter 2017 - 2018

Alf, I wasn't at all impressed with Arpora Woods in 2015 & 2016. The path beyond the quarry was overgrown with thorns and impassable. I had white-spotted fantail, greenish warbler and a few other birds, but it wasn't great. On the other hand, I'd been planning on making it to Fort Aguada in...

Must have gone up then. I was only getting 92 in January and February 2016.

    Goa Winter 2017 - 2018

I was at Backwoods for two-night stays in early 2015 and 2016. The forest walks were still there to be had and the frogmouths were showing well, although in 2016 they had to be relocated because they'd changed their roost from the day before. When we went out at dusk for nightjars in the field...

Let's hope they hang about for the winter. I just booked my trips with Lloyd yesterday and both those sites are on the itinerary

After missing out this year, I'm heading back for a fortnight on 23rd January. I'll put up anything interesting.
