Sony RX10 1V the new boy.

Thanks for the reply. The second photo of the bird is just great - against the dark water, with the evening sun shining on its back. About your earlier post... The first shot is lovely, it must hurt to find out later the AF hasn't coped. Shot 2: the bird is 20cm or so away from the initial...

Also, why would anybody turn off a camera when birding? Batteries are cheap.

Congratulations - splendid photos of an ultra-rarity! I've often tried to shoot swifts. Sometimes I got lucky results of similar quality. However, to get these shots of an individual bird is extraordinary. I don't think I could do it with my V2. - Did you shoot with the 24fps mode? How long was...

Sony RX10 1V the new boy.

In such a situation, when you have perhaps 4-5 seconds, can't you focus on a tree close to the raptor's flight and lock focus? A half-decent ID shot would be almost guaranteed, or am I overlooking something?

The Nikon P900 or P1000 are great for distant birds. For an expert who uses a bino and can easily ID birds from their voices, such a bridge camera can be a fine tool - to get ID shots and some wader watching. I might replace my 2.5 kg heavy "wader solution" by a dedicated long-distance bridge at...

Sony RX10 1V the new boy.

Thank you, Justin and Steve, for your replies. Several BIF-ers have sold their Nikon V3 for the Sony RX10iv, and one day I might follow. DSLRs are heavy. I have the Nikon V3 with a similar quality EVF - 2.4 million dots, like the Sony. A massive improvement over the V2's EVF. When it's easy to...

Sony RX10 1V the new boy.

Disclaimer: I don't have a RX10iv, and little opportunity for seabird-watching. - Do you think this failure is model-specific, or is it a more general EVF/OVF issue? I've encountered cases where I found an OVF (of a Canon 450D, or a bino's) much superior to an EVF. For example, larks sitting in...

Sony RX10 1V the new boy.

At dpreview two former Nikon V3 + CX 70-300 users have explained why they now prefer the Sony rx10 iv for birds in flight. What I found particularly convincing were these terns in flight shot by Jack Scholl. - So I'll definitely watch this and other threads on the new Sony camera with great...
