    He asked if language knowledge was 'urgently needed' :) In my experience, for a birding trip, the answer is simple - no it is not. Always nice to have a bit, but nowhere did I ever have anything more than very minor inconvenience due to lack of language. I even hitchhiked a few times in Japan...
