    I was there today as well.Didn't see the Manderin but saw the Scaup and 7 Goosanders two were cracking males they had really bright salmon /pink underparts.

    Most of the Mealy Redpolls i've seen looked slighty bigger than Lesser Redpoll.Typical ones are easy to id but you do get birds that are extremely difficult to id.

    You dont need any fieldcraft for seeing these Bitterns if birders just stayed in the hide and had more patience.They would see the Bitterns.

    Around Langdon Beck and Cow Green reservoir are good areas for seeing Redwings especially Fieldfares some years there are huge flocks of them.

    Bonaparte's Gull was reported again at 11 this morning i got down there for 20 past.There were only two birders there Brian U and a Teeside birder and they hadn't seen it.Very few gulls at Whitburn this morning.

    I agree Adam the flats could be a first class little nature reserve as you say it's got great potential.I also agree we shouldn't give up on trying to get it sorted out and i know others feel the same as we do

    Hi Steve Hurworth Burn used to cracking for waders when the water level was right seen 15 species of wader there in one day.Still think you cannot beat Barmston Pond for waders when the water level is right.But i think we have lost Barmston Pond for waders which is a crying shame.

    Yes you are right i should have looked at the pic properly silly me.Have to say the juv BH gulls do look a lot smaller than the 2 adults.Might be just the way they situated in the pic making them look smaller.

    I find Roseate Terns stand out well in a tern flock by how white they look.The Roseate Terns i have seen have had very little pink on the underparts or none at all.I have seen a few bright individuals over the years.I think the pink flush to the underparts is a bit of misnomer.

    Yes i agree the bill of Arctic doesn't always look short but generally i would say the bill is shorter.Another good id feature is the upper wing of Arctic is pale grey lacking the dark wedge of Common and from below outer primaries have a narrower black trailing edge.

    Yes short bill and short legs are good id features for Arctic Tern.Tail streamers go past the wing tips when at rest.In flight Arctic terns have a short necked appearance and a smaller looking head ,wings are also slighty narrower than Common.Underparts are much greyer than Common Terns.Whitburn...

    Hi Foghorn some Common Terns can have all red bills.Arctic terns usually have dark blood red bills and normally shorter in length than Common Terns.As i was saying to you before look at the jizz of the birds ,Arctic tern has a different jizz to Common Tern.
