I was watching a male blackcap this morning in my garden, and it was feeding on bread. I've never seen any blackcaps feed on bread before, the insect population must be really depleted with the snow.

Thankyou. ----------- On Thursday, I had a walk from the Floaters Mill Pub to the Smiths Arms Pub. Despite the mud and a bit of rain, it was an enjoyable walk and I saw some really nice birds as well. Kingfishers were often seen flying up and down the river, and a pair alerted me to...

Hi, Can anyone tell me the password for the Bird News on the DBC website ? I haven't received the most recent Lek, so I can't view the page. Thankyou.

Out of all the places you expect to see a Harris Hawk, would the Galleries Shopping Centre, Washington, be on your list ? Well I saw one today there, and, no, I'm not mistaken. While I was in the library perusing some books, I saw it flying away from its keeper (or whatever you call the person...

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed a boom in numbers of song thrushes ? Before this year I rarely saw them in my garden, but since winter, I've had some breed successfully in the garden. Away from my garden, I have noticed more song thrushes as well. I thought at first that I could be...

The Temmincks Stint was still present at Houghton Gate yesterday evening, which contradicts S Howat's report. I'm not saying he wasn't there but I never saw anyone else ! Where were you at, Steve ? (Assuming you read and post on this forum)

Neither do I. Why did you point out a spelling mistake ? Are you such a pedantic person that you need to point out every mistake ? If we're being so picky, I think you should have an apostrophe on the third word of your sentence. Obviously not. You might do, but I don't think learning...

It is a bit below the belt taking the mick out of a spelling mistake, especially when I am only 14. Would you be so quick to point out something so trivial as a spelling mistake if I had learning difficulties ? I think not. I apologise to Neil for 'doubting' him; I would have liked to see a...

Sorry to sound so doubtful, but what makes you think that you saw a Temnick's Stint ? I'm not doubting you, but I would like to see photos.

Salthome Reserve yesterday was a very productive visit with lots of birds around. Wheatear, GC Grebe, lots of Yellow Wagtails, a male Garganey from Saltholme Pools Hide, Grey Heron (with a damaged wing), Canada Geese goslings. At the Bus Stop Hide, there are plenty of Avocets, with one even...

Houghton Gate this evening - 2 LRP, 1 Common Sandpiper. I wonder, Mr. Evans, who will get the first ultra-rare migrant at this under-rated site.

On the 3rd page of this link, there is a pretty basic map. http://www.gateshead.gov.uk/DocumentLibrary/Leisure/Leaflets/countryside/Derwent.pdf Hopefully, it will help. ;) EDIT: The 4th page could help you a bit more as it is more in-depth.

A warm evening last night resulted in myself going to Houghton Gate. Very surprised to see a Ruff , as well as a Common Sandpiper. Afterwards, a walk down a stream next to the Floater's Mill pub was productive, with a kingfisher flying down the river. Mallard duckings also present.

I note SE, who we know as Stevie Evans, has reported an osprey flying over Houghton Gate. Does this birder have any photos of the bird ? In my birding news, a first male Blackcap of the year signing yesterday. A house martin yesterday at Lambton Estate, also. At home, dunnocks nesting.

Do you think this weekend should be spent at the coast looking for migrants ? After hearing about Andrew Kinghorn's Chiffchaff, maybe it is about time we went down to the coast to look for some raritys. Your opinions ?

They move around quite a bit and can turn up almost anywhere, so don't worry about not seeing one.

Just heard about wor JB. What a shame, eh ? It will be fantastic once he's running around the local patches again for his ticks. No, he hasn't got an infestation of creepy crawlies :-0
