Some great species there Owen. That Liaohekou Nature Reserve sounds like a place to revisit for sure. Is that the one that has Red-crowned Cranes? Good numbers of Oystercatchers and Avocets. Congrats of the Pallas's Grasshopper Warbler! Another small warbler to look out for that spends a...

White-throated Rock Thrush male! Stunner! Love the egret and heron shots as well. Great to hear about the rookery and the fact that it is behind a fee :)

Wow Owen, what a post!! I must admit that every time I see a Saunders's gull in breeding plumage my heart jumps. Some great species there including the Pied Avocet and Black-tailed Godwit. Of interest, Bar-tailed Godwit far far far outnumbered Black-tailed (100:1) on the east coast of...

Love this report Owen and fantastic photos as well. The Saunders's behaviour is of a nesting bird? It's too early for them to have eggs now though? I've read that they nest on "undisturbed" sandy beaches in the Panjin area. Great to see them in full breeding plumage - one of the best looking...

Some great pics Owen and some good species. Sorry to hear about your "expert" that wasted a day for you!

Hi Owen, Dandong is a great birding destination. The Yalu Jiang (River) from the ocean to the Great Wall section there can be really good for ducks in the winter. Male Smew can be seen along main road along the river there as well as many others. The grounds around the great wall section are...

Nice record Owen. I've only seen Hazel Grouse in Liaoning at very high elevation in forest (Phoenix Mountain near Dandong). The way you described it reminded me of Japanese Quail as well. I've also seen Daurian Partridge once in a similar manner. Quite an experience to have one fly right...

Congrats Owen. Love the Grebes out of water shot. They look funny and very unusual to see them out on the land like that indeed. Horned Grebes are always nice. Nice pics.

    Nice Cormorant flight shot Owen!

Sounds like a great place Owen. Love the Indian Cuckoo call - often heard in early summer but rarely seen. The Black-crowned Night-herons must be breeding nearby. Sounds like you've reached the doldrums in terms of migrant birds seen regularly. I bet that reservoir will be pumping again in...

I love Little Owls Owen and great capture with the video. A little similar call to their cousins the Burrowing Owl. I know what you mean about the mid June doldrums at your latitude.

Hi Owen, How about a Eurasian Bittern as your mystery noise?

I also love the ground squirrels! Never heard of them before. Super cool.

Happy migration times Owen. Citrine Wagtail has to be a good bird for your area? I only saw 2-3 the entire time in my Dalian days. Gorgeous individuals. Love Pallas's Reed Bunting in breeding plumage also.

That marsh is looking good. Is it close to the ocean? I guess most things in your area aren't too far from the ocean. Looking forward to blistering photos of a Baillon's Crake working the edges :)

Great to see you back again Owen. I hope this is the beginning of a great spring migration for you. The Bluetail is a sign of things to come.

Merry Christmas to you too Owen. Here's to great birds into the new year and upright Christmas trees!

Hi Owen, a good read again and sounds like a great place to bird. The bunting you have photographed is a Pallas's Reed Bunting. The upper and lower mandible are different colours and the bill shape is not as robust as a Common Reed as well. Common Reed have more of a big and bulky Purple...

Yes, Pallas's Rosefinch. Either female or first winter male? Great to get the Sib. Weasel out in the open like that! Keep the reports coming Owen, I love to see what you are seeing.

Thanks Owen, I replied to him in the other thread. The gull in post #792 is Black-headed. The gulls in post #793 are Black-headed on the left, Mongolian/Vega in the middle and the far right one is the same I think. It's not dark-mantled enough to be Black-tailed in my opinion. It also looks...

You nailed that Pipit Owen. Safe travels and have a great time home for a bit. I'll miss your accounts of spring migration in Liaoning on this forum. In terms of the Vega vs. Mongolian ID topic, I found this incredibly tricky. During late spring, most Mongolians should technically be on...

I love your reports lately Owen. Things are really starting to move (your contacts and the birds) and you're into some good sites now. Your area is fantastic for birding and significantly underbirded. It's going to be exciting what the rest of this spring migration brings you. Ebird is a...

Hi Owen, you're getting in the good stuff and areas now. Keep those relationships on good terms and the gates will continue to open (or at least the back doors will still be available :) I smiled as I read your description of the wind. I know the feeling of trying to look through a scope on...
