Has anyone got a Neoprene Lens Covers set for this lens yet?( or the Contemporary version) I am trying to decide between 'outdoorphotographygear' and 'wildlifewatchingsupplies' . BTW I see they both now do a expandable sock sleeve for the zoom portion.

I would guarantee you would have got a better result if you had used f8 and a decent tripod Mick let alone any micro adjustments, but at the end of the day if you are happy with a shot like this then that is all that matters. All the very best anyway Mick.

Well if the conditions were like you described Mick then doing that AFMA test was a complete waste of time. You certainly need a stable target and platform to shoot from as well as constant light. Its dead easy to tell if you do need any micro adjustment without using any bought software.

That's a good idea Mick, I am sure the Sport is a superb lens but you have to remember that with 600mm (960mm ff fov ) any atmospheric light pollution is enhanced as is slight vibrations due to Camera movement. If you are handholding then you still need a decent shutter speed to counteract...

That's what I thought I was saying when I said 'Its more to do with the focal length of the lens and the high pixel density of the sensor than with the actual weight of the lens' Anyway I think I will bow of this thread before it degenerates into a FM style slanging match.

    New Sigma 150/600

I have always said this about high pixel density sensors, you just need better technique than a 1.3 cropper or a full framer. It more to do with the focal length of the lens and the high pixel density of the sensor than with the actual weight of the lens. Although with a heavier lens you may...

Yep, further to my post above Paul and to see the effect of Camera shake especially with something like a 600mm lens , if you set-up on a tripod with a timer release and take a series of shots in normal AF and then compare all those shots zoomed-in on the PC, you are likely to see the effects...

    New Sigma 150/600

No it does not Nick, in fact the best way to tell if a lens needs any AFMA is to compare the normal AF to the live view one. I set-up the Camera on a tripod and take a test shot in live view using 10x mag - I then defocus and shoot from the same place using normal AF. If the normal AF shot is...

If its better IQ you want Jeff then a FF will beat the pants off of your current two lenses IMO so that could be the way to go but do not underestimate the 'reach' you will lose from a APS-C sensor. As I have said before using a 600mm lens on a APS-C size sensor is not quite straight forward as...

That's as good as to be expected from that distance I would say, not bad for ISO 2000 either, I see you had a nice shutter speed as well (better to have slightly more noise than a soft image). And I guess that is without even checking the AFMA for the combo - just because a lens is right with...

    New Sigma 150/600

You always have to be more careful with a higher density sensor Jeff especially with long lenses - there is nothing new with that as it has been especially relevant with APS-C sensors since they moved to around 18+ MPs, this all all part of the technique needed. You have to have better support...

Some great theories about Cameras and distant shots here lol. I think a lot of it is people expecting the impossible and trying to blame the Camera and or Lens when they do not achieve it. Even with close-ups the quality of light is a big factor but for distant shots it is much more important...

I see what you mean, it has focused on the hedge behind better than the building I would say. I did read somewhere that somebody had used the in-camara AFMA and and then stacked it with the Sigma dock AFMA but not sure if it worked or not. Well worth a try I would say.

Any of you Sigma sport owners tried the lens with a 1.4x tc yet? I tried my Siggy 'C' out in the garden today and results were very encouraging. I was using a Canon 1.4x tc mkII and was amazed at just how well it AF'd considering it was at f9 (although it fools the Camera into thinking it is...

When you have any of the dock settings in force by having C1 or C2 switched on then the lens the focus limiter switch is auto disengaged. In this case whatever the dock setting is for the focus limiter then that will apply (if you have not changed it then it will be on Full). I had the same...

I agree with you about switching off OS (or IS) for BIF, you are most always at shutter speed where it is not needed anyway and OS can only slow things down IMHO. As for Focus tuning - it is the same as AFMA although with these Sigma zoom lenses you can AFMA four distance zones whereas with...

I have just had a look at the Joby teather and it looks great value for money at £6.50 from Amazon UK. Think I will order one!

    New Sigma 150/600

I may be misunderstanding it as well, I thought that it was the stud that gave away and not the whole metal loop! looking at mine (after 6 years of use) it does appear that the hole that the stud goes through could be worn a bit although I do not know what it was like from new as there needs to...

    New Sigma 150/600

Yep I have read about the odd failure but never knew about that piece before. Most of what I have read has been the connector that screws into the tripod foot coming loose but that is easily rectified by wetting the rubber washer before screwing in, that way it will never come loose in my...

Which is the part that wears out? I have seen a few post where people have had an accident with the straps but when questioned they never say what part has failed. Was it the carabiner clip screw or something else. I ask because I have had my strap for 6 years and used it umpteen times without a...

Yes I know your link was wrong Paul but I went in and compared the Tammy wide open (f5.6) at 400mm and the sigma wide open (f6.3) at 400mm and to my mind the Sigma slightly shaded it in mid-frame.

    New Sigma 150/600

Totally disagree if one is trying to compare two different lenses, even if someone has both lenses in the field at the same time (an absolute necessity to compare two lenses) you still have other elements that could skew the results - Light at time of release, settings, and most especially...

    New Sigma 150/600

There is a fair bit of difference between f6.3 and f8 at 600mm according to TDP (on both the Tammy and Sigma S). I know from first hand experience that the Tammy was better at f8. BTW at what point does the Sigma S drop from f6.3 to f5.6? I know the Tammy is f5.6 at 400mm but according to TDP...

    New Sigma 150/600

I would disagree that the Tammy is much sharper at 400mm, both wide open Paul - I would say that mid-frame the Sigma just nicks it.

    New Sigma 150/600

Yep, I have looked at just about every comparison there is on there for Canon fit lenses.Have you had a look at what difference the Cameras makes to these TDP lens comparisons? - try comparing the 400/5.6 with the 1D MKIII v the 60D. Full frame Cameras are a lot more forgiving so its a shame...
