Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

Eddy, protecting soaring birds from electrocution on pylons using spikes and other measures is European law in SPAs (ZEPA in Spanish). Here in Portugal we have most of them (1,000s!) installed - at great cost to the national electric company EDP. The Portuguese Birdlife partner, SPEA worked...

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

Eddy - I must have painted it cerca 1994 so its lasted a while. I'm sure its not important and the owners of the property (who I painted it for) would do it. Its a very kind offer of yours but I'd hate you to miss a nice bird while at Algarrobo so please don't paint it!! ;) Great advice on the...

Eddy - is the white painted stone at the access track entrance to the Algarrobo bird obs on the N340 still there? On the stone is written "Huerta Serafin". Maybe now there is a sign for the bird obs?. Anyway - I'm curious as I painted it and it was useful for knowing you were on the right track.

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

They're in no hurry to migrate maybe, as they breed very late. If they have a good food supply they may stay in the area for a while. We get birds every autumn at Sagres that hang on for a couple of weels or more. Great record - in my years down there I never clinched one, they are pretty damn...

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

Yes - they are in the valley also south of main road near El Bujeo by Hotel Meson de Sancho/El Cuarton where I used to live in suitable habitat. Also, found generally on the slopes of hills just north of the N340 through much of the Strait - at least they were 20 yrs ago! There were breeding...

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

Hi Niels, sorry to butt in! Yes, Dartford is common throughout (and the Algarve, honestly ;) - I know we missed them!) in approx 1m high scrub with no or just scattered trees. Its especially common in Gum Cistus scrub - which is usually on slopes. Its found at all altitudes in S. Iberia. The key...

Maybe the mods could remove - the lack of evidence would eliminate the risk of legal problems :-O

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

I suspect that European pubic safety laws have something to do with it - at least here in Portugal I know a couple of landfill sites that now have more restricting access, which has meant one cannot get close enough to all the rubbish and the birds.

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

I share your enthusiasm for the area - it does have a really special atmosphere. I hope that things will improve - I assumed La Janda had some form of legal protection - it amply fulfils criteria for being an SPA (ZEPA). EDIT: Just read the Amigos de La Janda website and they say the same -...

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

That doesn't sound good - though on google maps the immediate area looks much as it was in the early 1990s. I remember entering the area on foot at least once via - under the old N340 bridge on foot - by the paper factory (or what was one). . Maybe in the area south of the road that looks...

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

They were taken off the list of considered rarities in Portugal recently - 2008 (I think). I see them fairly regularly - this autumn there were some 7-8 inds. around the clifftop grasslands of the Sagres peninsula - in the last 2 weeks there are some 3 birds - and I would imagine there are one...

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

Eddy - I have attached a link where I found as many as 4 Richard's Pipits on one visit in 1992..(?) https://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?msid=212108937248507062879.0004ed853d3fca7722608&msa=0&ll=36.177696,-5.451322&spn=0.007361,0.011609&iwloc=0004ed854a0da7656e36f Area indicated shows open areas...

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

Hi Eddy, I have noticed the lack of mention of Richard's Pipit in the Strait area - I found them twice in December/January just north of the N340 at Palmones on the bits of grassland there, when I lived in the area (early 90's). I would have thought that they maybe occur at La Janda occasionally...

Me too - and I agree with what you say, many q's need an answer - though I have a horrible feeling the ID won't be resolved. I found Ed Hunter on here - by searching: http://www.birdforum.net/showpost.php?p=1317216&postcount=38 So you can now send him a PM or email ;) All the best and hope...

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

Me too - I've lost my last few hundred emails and no longer have contact. Note to Martin - from the little that he mentioned to me his bird didn't sound like ours. I suggested he should contact Rui as he requested photos of the bird in Portugal.

They certainly winter in good numbers on the saltmarshes of Palmones - and I'm pretty sure the do at La Janda.

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

(from one birdman to another...ehehe) Nice to hear the migration is "pumping" along the straits...I spent some years in the area, a good while ago and your sightings take me back. Especially though I share your nostalgia (!) for La Janda - I was told a long time ago Lammegeiers, Wolves and...
