Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

Sorry to see this thread largely abandoned! Had 10 days in Jimena de la Frontera a couple of weeks back. It was still hot - 29 degrees most days and 32 on a few. But that's nothing compared to the 44 degrees in the summer. Some small rain a few days before I arrived did little to relieve the...

I've never seen Alpine Accentor in 15 years of visiting SW Spain! Can you let me know where? Was it up at Montejaque? That's where I mostly look! We had to go round again when landing in Gib. Fortunately he popped it in nicely second attempt. Malaga airport had been closed for much of the day...

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

Just back from a short weekend in southern Spain. We spent a few wet hours driving to and across La Janda last Friday. The weather was too foul to attempt the walk to the beach at Los Lances. On the plus side the track into La Janda has just recently been regraded and is now as smooth as the...

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

We've recently started flying into Gibraltar (instead of Malaga) and walking over the border to get a hire car - it's just over the road. In January the pilots made two attempts to land into a full gale, but we then went to Malaga instead. The hire car company phoned me when the plane was on the...

Hmmm... It does say birds migrating through at the top of the page, but I suppose birds could circle back and end up being recounted. I've always found the Spanish (and other Nationalities) doing the counts to be pretty accurate.

Good selection there. 12 Ruppell's is good news. Lesser Spotted Eagle - not a satellite tagged one? Would make interesting tracking.

Visited La Janda yesterday. Slow going, but oddly productive! 4 Swamphens in various places 5 Spoonbills dotted about. About a million Cattle Egrets mostly in the colony along with a few nesting Gossy Ibis, of which more were in the now flooded fields. Several pairs of Blck-winged Stilts...

Good stuff. That wind can be a b..... Did you look in at the Laguna Dulce at Campillos? It's near Teba and often has good birds in winter. I stopped there once when there was NO water at all and a flock of 150 or so Little Bustards circled in to roost! This was at about 4pm as dusk was setting in.

Car Hire..... That story beggar's belief. In my very early visits I used Europcar, but got fed up with them when they insisted on the car returning with a full tank, trying to charge me €40 when it was clearly over half full once, I demanded the keys and went off to fill it up, cost €16. In...

Also: try checking the website. Rarebirdsspain. It keeps abreast of all the national rarities, and any Lesser Flamingos will be reported there.

Hmm. Probably John C's info will be helpful with this. Marbled Duck - on the saltpans around Trebujena on the Guadalqivir. Long drive. Not sure about January. Little Swift - may be resident at the mouth of the Guadalqivir around the town (John?) Lesser Flamingo - Fuente de Piedra? Saltpans...

The entrances from Zahara and Vejer were both fine when I was there last month, and I drove most of the way to Benalup. The track along the main channel is generally kept in reasonable condition because of all the agricultural vehicles. They were just starting the rice harvest and those fields...

He says to try googling migres fundacion or fundacion migres. They do publish the sightings from the various watchpoints. Unfortunately, he is in the UK at present and not near his computer!

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

Had a drive across La Janda yesterday. Slightly alarmed that the Guardia Civil were stopping and searching EVERY vehicle just at the entry opposite the turn to Zahara. Didn't seem interested in me so I drove on in! Along the embankment I found a few skulking Bluethroats, Marsh and Hen Harriers...

Last day today, but stayed local. Delighted to see some Bee-eaters after hearing them for a couple of days. Flat calm day so nothing much moving. Willow Warblers in song, Cuckoos also calling. Saw two Hoopoes and 3 Woodchat Shrikes today, so some new stuff arriving. Anyway, leaving it up to you...

Yesterday over Jimena: 280 Black Kites 1 Short-toed Eagle 4 Booted Eagles 5 Black Storks Then at 4pm went to a lecture at Huertagrande all about the reintroduction of Osprey into Spain. In Spanish. Got the gist - things are improving! Then stopped off at Punto Carnero for a quick watch. Mostly...

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

No-one else out and about? Clear blue skies all day today, not good for finding birds of prey! Only saw a few each of Black Kite and Booted Eagle, one STE. However, while in the cork-oak forest, I did see 2 male Marsh Harriers go north. And a Spanish tick when I disturbed 3 Tree Pipits! Later in...

Strong Northerly wind here today. Despite that an early bunch of 300+ Black Kites with a few Eagles headed high but west of Jimena this morning an hour or so later lots more ( another 300 or so) flew over, again high this time east of Los Angeles. A few Alpine and Common Swifts. Saw a...
