Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

As I felt the title of this thread a little restrictive, I started an alternative with a broader remit - Birding Cadiz (& nearby). This may explain the neglect.

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

A change of pace for this post as I'm looking at some ornitho-history and a suburban site of relatively little interest in the scheme of things but still a useful site for those on a short or weekend trip to Jerez de la Frontera who want to squeeze in a little birding. Laguna de Torrox (or...

Thanks, Mike. More to come but if you're impatient to read more I've posted extended versions of this text with more photos on my blog (see below)

Desembocadura de Rio San Pedro Sandwiched between the approach to the impressive Puente De La Constitución De 1812 into Cadiz and Puerto Real, the Barriada Rio San Pedro is a slightly shabby suburb saved by a pleasant esplanade overlooking the Desembocadura (= rivermouth) de Rio San Pedro and...

Montes Propios The city of Jerez de la Frontera sits on a low hill surrounded by rolling farmlands covered with cereals, sunflowers and, of course, vineyards. Understandably, this rich farmland forms the core of the municipality but, as the map shows, there’s a 20 km long administrative tombolo...

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

When I first visited Andalucia in the 1970s the whale-watching industry didn't exist but when I returned in the early 2000s it had become a significant touristic attraction in Tarifa. I went on a couple of trips hoping to see a few seabirds as well as whales. As hoped, I managed to obtain some...

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

A good trip report. Thanks for your kind comment here and in your report. It's always a pleasure to help fellow birders get the most out of their trip so I'm delighted to hear that you had such a good time and that my notes were so helpful. When friends join me in Spain Llanos de Libar is always...

E-bird tells me it was captured and ringed at La Zarga (near Bolonia) on Friday 3 Dec. Is the sighting at Los Barrios an additional one?

I had a tweet from Eddy today and, although still unwell, he's hoping to go home from hospital in the near future. I know all his friends here will wish him all the very best and hope to see him out in the field come the autumn if not before.

Thanks for the update. Things are clearly very serious but I hope he manages a speedy recovery. Please keep me updated either here or via a PM.

I'm shocked and very saddened to hear this news. Although I corresponded with Eddy a good few times, I met him all too infrequently and was disappointed not to bump into him on my recent trip to Spain. Condolences to his friends and family.

The port area isn't huge so you should dock within walking distance of the train station. The train will quickly take you to San Fernando station from which a footpath (Sendero Salina Dolores) takes you along the edge of the salinas back towards Cadiz. I've not done the walk personally but you...

In brief:- European Roller - quite possible anywhere on migration (e.g. La Janda) but the nearest breeding sit is the Osuna area (Seville Province) which is c2hr 20 mins from Sotogrande. Great Bustard - another species found around Osuna Little Bustard - once again the best area is probably...

By 'migration across the Straits' I assume you're thinking of raptors and storks and the answer is that migration of some sort scarcely stops! The peak for most such species is in late March but it starts in earnest in February and should be building up come next week. I've attached a chart...

Having been in an atrocious, undrivable condition earlier this autumn, the track up to Algorrabo has recently been repaired and is now negotiable in a normal car.

Fundacion Migres, never previously very good at disseminating information, has been tweeting totals (often retweeted by 'Inglorious Bustards) passing over Cazalla this autumn.

There should be no problems since they've constructed a purpose built slip road to the watchpoint.

Thanks for this I will put a warning in the next 'edition' of my birding notes. I'm disappointed with 'Do You Spain' as I have always found them very helpful in such situations - however, I guess that if the supplier won't budge then there not a lot they can do beyond the 'nuclear option' of not...

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

I'll send you the latest version of my notes anon, but I think Jon's summed the situation up well. Marbled Duck are a lot scarcer in winter and are probably more dispersed than in spring/summer/early autumn. Laguna Tarelo, 'Bonaza Pools' & pools along the road beside the Guadalquivir SW from...

As of 2015 a birding tour company (see https://ingloriousbustards.wordpress.com/) run by Simon Tonkin and Nikki Williamson has been based at Huerte Grande. They are happy to advise visiting birders and have just started to maintain a sightings diary.

The Facinas route has been impassable in anything other than a 4x4 for some time although approaching from Benalup is usually OK with care. I've attached a map which should help. I've never had a problem driving in from the N 340 (Note Las Lomas estate is strictly private & I'm not sure the...
