YBW seen with mixed tit flock in car park: very sorry would have let visitor center know but was not yet open when I left this AM

Christ no, thinking about what less frequent waders were around and saying no to curlew sand caused that one! Spotted redshank was indeed the intended wader in question, must not rush before tea!

Notable influx of ruff this evening with 132 on the reserve outnumbering black-tailed godwit (one of the blackwit was ringed in Cork, Ireland). Also at least 20 common snipe with a Pec Sand cameo to round things off, little stint, greenshank and spotted sandpiper also present. Wigeon numbers...

It's a bit like Cley with a less corporate visitor center, more stringing of Terek sandpipers and with more birds ;););) Personally I am a wader junkie who takes advantage of high tides, but as Toby (Warden) and others point out there is plenty going on even on the wader front outside high tide...

Saw two microlights passing over the reserve at 1900 flying over visitor center heading South, no clear ID markings but second one lurid lime green and purple. What are the appropriate bylaws regarding aircraft flying over nature reserves, and is there anyone to give a word in the ear to in this...

https://www.tidetimes.org.uk/ is a link that actually works, an app is also available to download for the iphone. (Disclaimer: printed tide tables are also available and are equally as effective)

I have been known to look at birds other than waders. Occasionally ;)

Here is a list of the optimal tidal periods to visit the reserve from a 'wader spectacular' perspective (birds coming to roost on the reserve from the Wash in large numbers): I find that black tailed Godwit roost at high tide in v decent (1K plus) numbers and knot + dunlin come onto the wet...

For those of you who are BTO members and get copies of Bird Study, the following reference is a paper on tufted duck movements using nasal saddles as a CR marker (remember female AC4 breeding at Frampton that was seen by Andrew Chick, myself and others a couple of months ago?). Nice summary of...

Of course, in the information age of twitter and instant email updates caught unaware that the news came out first in 'old' media so naturally assumed incorrect journalism!

Hmm, according to the Independent i paper this morning, we have had breeding of Glossy Ibis on the reserve (!) Draconian 'suppression' or bad journalism Mr Collett?

Broke the 100 barrier for Black-tailed Godwit CR sightings this autumn with current tally of 110. There is at least one knot with a CR from Norway kicking about at high tide, but it has an above knee flag with three characters that is a sod to read.

New Country for CR sightings this evening: Northern Ireland (BHG) List now stands at 9: Iceland (Blackwit), Norway (Knot), Denmark (Avocet), Lithuania (BHG), Holland (Blackwit), France (Tufted Duck and Blackwit), Spain (Dunlin), Portugal (Blackwit) My money is on something from Poland next

Yup, but I'm talking about birds seen from one spot: basically as a reserve I reckon not even Cley could outdo 21 species from one hide in 90 minutes, incredible!

There has been mention in the twitterverse of a record of 24 different wader species seen on the reserve in a single day. From the 360 hide from 1825 to 1950 this evening I managed 21 wader species and FIVE spoonbill. Also two different avocets from the same colour ring scheme in Ely (Red D5 and...

Anyone having a look at the Blackwit for colour rings keep an eye out for the Avocets too: saw one today with red darvics but couldn't read the number, the bird was ringed as a juv at a colony near Ely but can't get the individual combination! Also glossy ibis on wet grassland

Big numbers of Blackwit came in today, went from 150 at 0700 to over 1000 this afternoon. Spotshank (4), ruff (double figures), redshank and Dunlin also amongst the deluge. Brilliant to see groups of 20 - 30 birds coming in straight from Iceland: get checking those legs for colour rings too...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSDMCB0vw8A Opinion on Blackwits is that cannot easily say either way, at least one more Icelandica. On the bright side, means will soon be getting the big numbers of them again

Will be shortly, I just want to show a couple of people first to get an independent opinion, but wanted to put a 'heads up' to get people looking and thinking about them!

Dropped in at eight thirty this evening and saw nine black tailed godwits that are convincing for the near threatened nominate limosa subspecies, as opposed to our usual icelandica. Have a nice digi-scoped record vid too! Also eight grey herons together, of which 7 were this years' juvs

Big influx of Whimbrel with 73 today on the wet grassland. 3 colour ringed blackwit and the spoonbill were other highlights of a productive afternoon

A productive evening resulted in my first yellow wagtail of the year seen chasing flies around the cattle near the East hide. No colour rings seen on the 260 blackwit but my fave Spanish CR Dunlin put in an appearance among a flock of 70 others. Good numbers of shelduck (125) in front of the...
