I did not say that you could not bring your current NatGeo as well :) To my mind, the full version of Sibley is too big to bring into the field except as an app. Niels

You could keep the book and combine with Sibley as an app, that’s how I travel to the US (if I even bring a book). A cheaper alternative is to combine it with the free Merlin app. Niels

The vacation trip report section here in BF has several good threads on Yucatan. This section of Birdforum likewise: https://www.birdforum.net/forums/mexico.557/ Niels

There is also the possibility of a couple of local, current subspecies that I do not know if they are mentioned in the Belize book such as the local form of N Rough-winged Swallow .... Niels

As I said, if you are aware of the problem with not including about 10 endemics from the north end of the peninsula/Cozumel, and the subspecies that looks different on Cozumel, using those two can work. I have multiple times lamented that Fagan and Komar did not include Yucatan in their target...

Personal opinion: for complete coverage, the old Howell and Webb is still the best. If you don't care about the relatively few endemics from the northern end of Yucatan, then you could get away with either the Fagan and Komar guide to northern CA or this one : Birds of Belize (I have no...

I have not been to Brazil, but looking at the field guides on my shelf, I would probably bring the Atlantic forest volume you mention as no 1 (the one to be brought into the field) but also bring the van Perlo book and the Argentina FG - the latter two would stay in the suitcase but could be...

Well, I just looked at Amazon.com for bird books for Colombia. The cheapest one not by van Perlo was $60. Maybe Lynx feel they can make a coin on a book costing a little bit less? Niels

Out of interest: the first of the guides linked to by Andy is a Wildlife Conservation Society guide. They also have a guide to Pantanal which on a world map does not look like it is too far away from Paraguay. Would the Pantanal guide be helpful? Niels

Howell and Webb tell you that the major change in Avifauna happens at the isthmus of Tehuantepec. However, Andy Kratter here in BF has argued that the change in Avifauna at the Rio Grande (but going north of the sky-islands of SE Arizona) is a stronger change than the change in Avifauna at the...

I have birded in Yucatan a number of times, almost always on my own (without a guide). The advantage of Howell and Webb is not only in the plates but also in the thorough text. The Peterson FG: how many species would have had to be added to cover the three easternmost Mexican states? 10-20? I...

I only know the Peterson guide, and agree I feel it is good for most species. I used it in Yucatan where the large majority of species are covered by this book, and there was a few cases where I was missing the good old trusty Howell and Webb. Most species was easy enough, though. Niels

Robert, I do not necessarily disagree, but I think this is worth mentioning in this thread for two reasons: 1) I was not aware that an app existed for Peru 2) the taxonomy in the app is more up to date than the book it was based on. Regarding charging of devices: there are solar panel devices...

Peru: Not a book but in app form: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/birds-of-peru/id1088336630?mt=8 This is a collaboration between Princeton Field Guides and BirdsEye Nature Apps so builds on the Schulenberg et al field guide, and the taxonomy is updated to current Clements taxonomy. Only for...

No, the Costa Rica Guide only covers to western Panama. If you expect to go to the canal or even further east, the similar Panama guide will be needed. For the northern part of your trip, a recent book for Belize (I think that is what I remember) should cover all but a few of the possibilities...

The text on howell and webb mentions about 180 species endemic to the region covered (including areas down to western Honduras and Western Nicaragua). If you travel beyond the isthmus of Mexico, there are a good number of birds that would be likely to overlap with e.g., Costa Rica but not with...

Andy look at this thread: http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=211122 The Edwards book is described e.g., in post 3. One interesting proposal made in that thread: if only interested in Yucatan, there is a field guide to Belize that should be pretty good. Niels
