    I'm not a big fan of combination field guides and site guides. The latter part gets out of date very quickly (especially somewhere like the Middle East).

    This is great news. The Philippines is one country that really does need a modern field guide. I have a feeling the taxonomy is going to make for interesting debate. No doubt more drongos ahoy!

    Thanks for the heads-up. If the sample plates are representative of overall quality, this looks like a superb field guide. Now if only they could extend coverage to include the whole of China!

    Although I don't own it, I suspect the Helm Field Guide to the Birds of North East Asia by Mark Brazil would be the best option. I have the Field Guide to the Birds of China by John MacKinnon, which covers the whole of China but is not, in my view, up to the standard expected of a modern field...

    Aleksey, I would recommend 'A Guide to the Birds of the Philippines' by Robert Kennedy et al. Some of the illustrations are rather weak, and the taxonomy is (inevitably) rather dated, but it is otherwise a very useful book with excellent text.

    If you are using it as a field guide, I think the Myers guide to Borneo is superior simply on account of its much better illustrations. I also like the layout and method for describing vocalisations. As PapuanBirder notes, Philips is a more comprehensive book, but I question the benefit of...
