You may well be right. Zooming in on Google Maps suggests the side channel goes under Bristol Road and into woodland immediately south of Edgbaston Pool, very close to the outflow channel from the Pool. Does anyone know that outflow channel? Good Dipper habitat?

A single Dipper on the narrow side channel off the Bourn Brook behind the Dental Hospital around 9am this morning.

That's good news. I did consider popping in there this afternoon but ended up going to Bittell instead. Shall have to head that way next weekend, when I finally see daylight again.

    Lovely shots Keith.

There have been dozens of Swifts over Bournville all summer. I'm guessing I'm probably more conscious this year due to the early reports of reduced numbers, but if anything I'd say there's more than usual around. Regular feeding groups of 5/6 at rooftop height, and larger groups (20+) almost daily.

Thanks for the correction. Got me all excited for a minute.

Where was the Firecrest? Worth a look tomorrow to see if that's still around.

There's photos around today of a Kingfisher frozen in ice in the Netherlands https://nltimes.nl/2018/03/02/bizarre-instagram-post-shows-kingfisher-bird-frozen-solid-ice

There was a pair of Sparrowhawks showing off to each other over Kings Norton playing fields around 11.45am yesterday.

    Kingfishers

Kingfisher on the usual Valley Parkway stretch of the Bourn around 10am. Also two Mistle Thrushes and and a flock of around 20 Starlings. Plenty of activity along the Bourn Brook in Selly Oak, although no sign of either Kingfishers or Grey Wagtails - water levels too high? Flushed a Snipe near...

    Kingfishers

Kingfisher at the Valley Pool outflow around 9am, flew off when it spotted me but I found it again further up the stream. No sign of the Heron today.

Turned out the single Siskin was a precursor to the gradual evolution of a large flock of Goldfinch, Siskin and a single Lesser Redpoll, which spent the afternoon touring our and neighbouring gardens. At one point we had four Siskins and a Goldcrest on the feeders, being harassed by several...

    Kingfishers

9am - Kingfisher on the Bourn, sat on a low branch over the stream by the pedestrian bridge just east of the boating lake. No sign of a Heron at the outflow. My first Kingfisher of the year, species no. 82 Also a Siskin in the oak tree at the end of our garden around 11am. That's a once/twice...

The Heron was in pole position, with the Kingfisher perched low over the water in a tree a few metres away. I should try to pop out and do some local sites today at some point, but we've been struck down with the Christmas lurgy - five days and counting - ugh.

Grey Heron and Kingfisher present and correct at the Valley Pool outflow, 3pm this afternoon.

    Kingfishers

The Heron and Kingfisher were still in their correct positions yesterday morning around 9am. Just got back in from a brief walk and there was a Heron walking around on the grass in Woodlands Park, at the back of the allotments. Not the first species I'd have expected to see in that park.

    Kingfishers

A Mistle Thrush flew over Rowheath fishing pool making the same clicking noise this afternoon, landing in a large tree which was already occupied by Starlings and Redwings, then immediately turned as though it knew it was being followed. Within seconds, the tree emptied as a male Sparrowhawk...

There was a Grey Heron along that stretch as well as the Kingfisher this morning. The Heron didn't seem all that bothered by the passing pedestrians.

    Kingfishers

I know they're not exactly rare around here, but I still did a double take when I saw it as it was so unexpected. Also at lunchtime - Manor Farm Park lake was still frozen at the north end as far as the island, so no Goosander or Shoveler. Plenty of smaller birds in the woods though. I was...

    Kingfishers

A two-King day. 11.30am, shortly after seeing the Red Kite - Kingfisher heading east along the Bourn near the Boating Lake. 12.30pm - Lower Bittell - Kingfisher flew across the north end of Mill Shrub.

    Kingfishers

That means they may well be back in Manor Farm Park then. I checked last weekend, no Goosander and only a single male Shoveler.

Fly-through Kingfisher along the River Rea by Lifford Lane tip around 10.30am this morning, heading south.

    Kingfishers

Upper Bittell Reservoir - 7pm - Kingfisher along the bottom of the dam. Flew off as I got close but circled around and landed back on the dam. Calling, and being answered from the woods along the outflow channel.

    Kingfishers

Again off patch - Kingfisher low across the lake at NT Dudmaston yesterday lunchtime. Lovely spot, that. Apart from the idiot dog owner who insisted she was ok with her two noisy and excitable dogs off their leads in a field with a herd of 20+ skittish and understandably frightened cows.

    Kingfishers

Way off patch, but just got back from a couple of days camping near Hay On Wye. Two Kingfishers chasing each other around just to the east of Whitney Bridge.
