Thanks Matt, good news, I'm sure the local birds benefited greatly.

Will the supplementary feeding in the field next to the crematorium be happening again this winter?

Get out of here, we just don't have the time

Just after it opened, for 30 mins or so? Richard Baker was in there, must have left shortly after me as I popped back to the maize field for another look before I went home, and he turned up in his car a few minutes after I'd arrived.

Managed exactly 50 species around Forge Mill and the maize field this morning, although I missed the Common Gull. Lovely morning for a walk. Thanks to the gents in the hide for their advice.

Thank you Dave. Didn't make it today, going to try on Thursday instead.

Any reason why the Hide may not be open tomorrow? Which day is 'work party' day at Sandwell? Thank you.

Thank you Matt. Sounds well used at this time of year.

Thank you. Where's the best viewing point for this field? I can't see any obvious footpath on Google Maps.

Dave, where is the maize field please?

    Sandwell Valley

That was me! Unless you got an identical text/tweet from Rob G? Two hours around Swan Pool and Salters Lane, 46 species, nothing remarkable beyond the Wheatears and my first Whitethroat of the year. Looks like I've done my usual trick of missing everything I'd come over hoping to see - no...

Thanks again for your help. Looking forward to actually being confident enough to ID one of these. A lot to learn still.

    Sandwell Valley

Thank you, that's helpful. But....the head on the YLG is streaked, whereas the LBBG is clean? It's a minefield.

Finally got a few days this week where I might not be at work during every hour of daylight. Fingers crossed.
  16. R

    Sandwell Valley

Thanks I will do. Seems to be a *very* fine degree of grading of grey to split YLG.

    Sandwell Valley

Thank you. So how would I tell this gull, which the website tells me is LBBG, from Yellow-Legged?
  18. R

    Sandwell Valley

Would anyone be kind enough to point out the key features which confirm that as Yellow-Legged Gull? At the moment, I'd take one look at it, think "pale LBBG" and walk on, but that's me not being confident on the differences.

Thank you. Once on site, these instructions proved to be very precise. Sadly no joy. We were there around 10.45 for half an hour or so. 42 species recorded in a whistlestop couple of hours around Swan Pool and Forge Mill. Sadly not the Brambling, as the 20 mins we were in the Visitor Centre...

Was the Firecrest reported on 1st Jan from the same area as the map on pg.238 of this thread (thanks to those who provided the map and directions)? All being well, I'm hoping to have a couple of hours round the Valley tomorrow morning, first chance since the Firecrest was reported weeks back...

On the Welsh coast over the summer, there was talk amongst the local birders about anglers on their patch being increasingly happy to shoot Goosanders and Cormorants. I shall be removing these leaflets if I see them.

Obviously thought there was some easy prey around.

Exactly 50% of those records are weekend dates, which presumably takes the actual total significantly over 100. Impressive.

The first one is particularly cringe-inducing.

Good mooch around Sandwell Valley this morning. 50 species, but nothing of any great interest beyond what's already been reported for today. Two Common Sandpiper on the gull rail at the south end of Swan Pool around 10am. LBBGs weren't happy about this but they took some shifting. 4 x...
