I thought the last was my final missive on Afghanistan. I have just reviewed all my photos I took whilst deployed, some of which have been posted in my BF Gallery. Last week I noiticed that one I took during and influx of White-winged Black Terns into Camp Leatherneck was in fact a Whiskered...

    Afghanistan

I have had the privilege of not only deploying for periods above and beyond what is normally expected of an individual but also to birdwatch for a total of 19 months in a country on the crossroads of the Western, Eastern Palaearctics and the Oriental Region. The run up to all the tours included...

    Afghanistan

A significant moment; this is my last post from AFG. A final trip to the sludge lagoon, I 'borrowed' a vehicle and managed half an hour - I'm glad I did. There has been a significant wader passage although yesterday's White-tailed Lapwing was reduced to a single bird. Also present...

Out - will have the joys of North Norfolk birding next week!

    Afghanistan

This could be my last post here. A drive to the far end of the inside of the wire to a newly dug sludge lagoon was very productive with White-tailed Lapwing (27), Black-winged Stilt (2), Wood Sandpiper (2), Little-ringed Plover (3) and a lone White-winged Black Tern. Also present Crested Lark...

A more productive day yesterday with overflying Crowned Sandgrouse, several Little Stints, four Green Sandpipers, two LRPs and at least three Lesser Sand Plovers. Reed Warblers appear to be retuirning and I flushed a Clamorous Reed Warbler in a drainage ditch this morning. R&R today with Cley...

    Afghanistan

A much better morning yesterday with a mixed flock (200+) of Crowned and Pin-tailed Sandgrouse drinking from a smelly grey water outlet. The flock was mainly Crowned but good to see better numbers of Pin-tailed. In the afternoon the first returning Dunlin (6) and Little Stint (1) along with a...

    Afghanistan

Four Crowned Sandgrouse feeding by a stream this morning and as I drove off I flushed a pair of Pin-tailed Sandgrouse. Beautiful birds.

for Lesser Sandgrouse please read Lesser Sand Plover. I had just got up when I typed this. A Clamerous Reed Warbler an hour or so later. Grounded and exhausetd in high winds. I am currently living in a fan assisted oven!

    Afghanistan

Four Lesser Sandgrouse buffeted south in strong winds this morning. It would appear the 100 day winds have started early.

He calls me Sir - it's OK!

    Afghanistan

A Lesser Sand Plover and a single Green Sandpiper are the only two species worthy of note. Two unidentified Syliva Warblers behind the loos; a place not to get caught with binoculars!

    Afghanistan

It does have its advantages - trips to the Canadian Prairie, the Arctic, jungle and the Kenyan Savannah!

    Afghanistan

A stunning male Roller on the perimiter fence at last light and three Crowned Sandgrouse within the wire. Things have really calmed down ornithologically speaking.
  17. RJSeargent

    Afghanistan

Only one male Blue-capped Redstart worthy of note all week. Swallows still present in good numbers though.

    Afghanistan

A quiet couple of days with just one Black-winged Stilt and a Green Sandpiper of note. Still plenty of Swallows around and the odd Crowned Sandgrouse but we really are getting to the hot part of the year where everything either departs or hides.

    Afghanistan

Swallows are now returning south - I suspect failed breeders. Crowned Sandgrouse appearing more and the odd Green and Wood Sandpiper still around in the wet areas

    Afghanistan

Two more Lesser Sand Plovers yesterday and a smattering of Tringa Sandpipers.
  21. RJSeargent

    Afghanistan

Another Afghan lifer with a first year Lesser Sand Plover through this morning; on a pond with a mixed bag of 30+ Green and Wood Sandpipers.
  22. RJSeargent

    Afghanistan

A single Black-winged Stilt and several Wood Sandpipers today. Swallows moving south and now two resident Common Mynas. Apart from that it is bloody boiling!!

    Afghanistan

Another walk within the wire came up trumps with three overflying Roller, half a dozen Crowned Sandgrouse and 3 (1 male) Pin-tailed Sandgrouse. The latter was a lifer so quids in really. Must do this more often.

Seek and thy shalt find A quick wander within the wire this morning. 1 male Pied Stonechat holding territory, numerous Laughing Doves and Crested Larks, 4 indignant looking Crowned Sandgrouse and surprisingly, a Little-ringed Plover. Darter Dragonflies hawking over a grey water stream...

Thanks guys. Things are drying up quite literally and I'm going to have to do what my wife has told me not to do and misbehave and go looking for them more often. So - Essential Kit for a Helmand Twitch (in order or priority): Old Bausch and Lomb Elite 10x 42 Binoculars Birds of the Middle...
