    Highgate-Waterlow Park

Nuthatch, Grey Wagtail, and Tufted duck have bred. Also had 4-5 Siskin through a couple of weeks ago.

    Highgate-Waterlow Park

Recent highlights - 6 Mandarin, a couple of Meadow pipits, a Skylark, 4 + Goldcrest, Chiffchaff, 2 Linnets and 3 Siskin in the park. Also 1 Snipe low over Highgate woods, 20 + Redwings over Coppetts wood.

    Highgate-Waterlow Park

Male and female Mandarin on the middle pond this morning in the rain. Wouldn't come to bread, undoubtedly wild. I watched a couple of Common Buzzards circle over Archway on Sunday, and there have been a couple of Chiffchaff and up to 5 Goldcrest in the park over the last week.

    Highgate-Waterlow Park

An earlier visit brought another Spotted Flycatcher, calling Chiffchaffs (2) + 1 in a mixed tit flock. Also of note was a Treecreeper, which I don't see too often here. There's a nightly calling Tawny Owl off Sydney Rd, Muswell Hill and I suspect a distant Hobby flying towards Alexandra Park on...

    Highgate-Waterlow Park

There was a Spotted Flycatcher in the park around 07.45 this morning. Still there when I left, middle pond trees on the cafe side. Also at least 2 Chiffchaffs, 2 Green Woodpeckers including a juvenile and a Swallow over. Last Thursday I watched 2 Meadow Pipits on the slope briefly plus a...

    Highgate-Waterlow Park

A whole month without posting. Not a lot to whet the appetite to be honest. The locals all seem to have bred successfully, notably Woodpeckers and there are at least 3 broods of Tufted duck now of varying sizes. I haven't seen the Grey Wagtail for a few days. There have been the odd Blackcap and...

    Highgate-Waterlow Park

Finally I've seen both Grey Wagtails together and I'm pretty certain I know where the nest is. Hopefully successful. It was like the Observer book of birds this morning, nothing rare but a fair selection of the residents. I had Greenfinch, Chaffinch, Green & G.S Woodpecker, Mistle & Song...

    Highgate-Waterlow Park

Just remembered , there were 5 in "tick" formation over The Woodman last weekend heading roughly North west.

    Highgate-Waterlow Park

Not too much of note to the wider birding community but a couple of birds of local interest recently. Yesterday a Kingfisher shot off the lower pond , Heathward bound. Frightened off by the less than Phantom bread thrower as is often the case here. I had a Yellow Wagtail on the newly dug over...

    Highgate-Waterlow Park

Over the sound of rain dripping on leaves there were a couple of Chiffchaff and Blackcaps belting out their song early this morning. I still see a Nuthatch occasionally and there seem to be more G.S Woodpeckers around than usual including one low down in a Rhodedendrom which was a bit...

    Highgate-Waterlow Park

I was alerted by mobbing Carrion Crows to a low Red Kite over Pembroke Rd, Muswell Hill this morning. A lovely bird in the sunlight and although I've seen them over here occasionally before they've always been at a distance. I tried to put this on London Birders with the same result as usual...

    Highgate-Waterlow Park

At least 4 Chiffchaff belting out their song this morning, a pair of Blackcap by the bottom pond , female with caterpillar, 6 Canada goslings still, coot hatched and 3 Swift over Archway.

    Highgate-Waterlow Park

Hi Matt, The only reservations I have about the Parakeets is that if their presence is detrimental to native wildlife then it is too late to do anything about it. As yet I've seen nothing concrete to suggest this though they do come across as quite domineering. Hopefully they occupy a niche...

    Highgate-Waterlow Park

A pair of Blackcaps this morning, 2 Chiffchaff, the regular Grey Wagtail, 3 Cormorants over and a Grey Heron over the village. 12 Parakeets in one tree yesterday was a bit ominous. Highest number so far I think.

    Highgate-Waterlow Park

This morning (07.30 ish)there was a singing male Whitethroat in the cemetery, 2 Willow warblers and 2-3 Chiffchaffs around the park, 1 treetop skulker may have been a Garden warbler though a bit obscured to be certain. Yesterday there were also 2 Willow Warblers and a regular Grey Wagtail. The...

    Highgate-Waterlow Park

A good bright crisp morning brought a Snipe flushed from the boggy area where one of the springs reappears by the middle pond. Reward for being in the park just after the gates are unlocked. There was also a Grey Wagtail on the island on the lower pond. Possibly one of a pair seen here a couple...

    Highgate-Waterlow Park

Yesterday afternoon there were 2 sizeable Terrapins basking on one of the fallen trees in the middle pond. Around 6pm a Common Buzzard passed over Highgate wood. This morning 3 Chiffchaff and a singing Blackcap were in the park.

    Highgate-Waterlow Park

Two Willow Warblers this morning, not a bird I see in great numbers in North London these days. At least 4 singing Chiffchaffs, 1 singing Blackcap and the usual Green Woodpecker, Tufties, 1 Kestrel over the village and fledged Pied Wagtails and parents on the hospital. Recently a female...

    Highgate-Waterlow Park

The colonies I know of around Muswell Hill are small and aren't always easy to see. Usually deep in a hedge or under eaves. Nothing like the large flocks I used to see in Lancashire, dust bathing, on the bird table, drinking from the garden pond and so on. One local colony to me is only 150...

    Highgate-Waterlow Park

This morning I had 2 singing Chiffchaff in the park and a couple in the cemetery. Also a Green Woodpecker, Cormorant over, a Blackcap pair and 2 House Sparrows in Highgate village (near The Flask).

    Highgate-Waterlow Park

Ring necked Parakeets were out in force this morning with birds over Muswell Hill (5), Highgate tube (2) and in the park (4-5 though very mobile). Also 1 over the hospital so a fair spread over this area. In the park the usual residents plus a singing male Blackcap again and a tatty looking...

    Highgate-Waterlow Park

An early Sand Martin was over the Colney Hatch lane/N.Circular wasteground this morning. Perhaps Wood Green res or Alexandra Park next though it was still there when I left around 07.10. Nothing spectacular in the park, though it's nice to see Spring getting under way. This week there has been...

    Highgate-Waterlow Park

Two Lesser Redpoll by the tennis courts and a part Chiffchaff song from the Kitchen garden area this morning. A bit of drumming coming from both ends of the park from the G.S Woodpeckers & a distant yaffle from the cemetery. Locally I had a Buzzard being mobbed on Sunday by a couple of crows...
