I suspect your best bet would be a visit to Tabarca with opportunities to see shearwater both from the ferry and the island.

I was sad to read on the Costa Blanca Bird Club website that Mark Etheridge, instigator of this thread and regular contributer, sadly passed away in late February after a battle with cancer.

Fantastic spots all along the road - birders who just go the visitors centre at San Filipe are missing out

Ian Hayes on Twitter advises: "Have now seen two different adult Spotted Eagles at El Hondo, Alacant: the satellite tagged Tonn on 26th (at Santa Agueda) and another with no tag on 27th (at El Hondo N gate)"

What's the current status of the former small Scrub Robin population that used to frequent the coast road south of Gran Alacant?

In danger of thread drift here! The boundaries of the various Anglo-Saxon kingdoms embedded and flowed over the "Dark Ages" but Mercia broadly covered from the Welsh borders to Cambridgeshire; from Berkshire up to Manchester / Leeds (its capital was Tamworth) i.e. a greater Midlands.

Will need a good camera to capture it from the English Midlands 8-P The Sociable Plover was last reported on the 29th December; both Pallid Harrier and GS Eagle were noted last week at El Hondo. Keep an eye on http://www.rarebirdspain.net/

BTW I chose Sierra Espuna over Sierra de Crevillente and combined it with Guadalentin plains. I know it's in Murcia rather than Alicante but for the record I saw Short-toed and Calandra Larks, Roller, Tree Sparrow, Bee-eater, Woodchat and Southern Grey Shrike at the latter and Crossbill...

Cheers Lazza - that's where I parked. Always wondered which stretch was the Vistabella Road! My issue was not only time but also water as I didn't appreciate how many hides there were :eek!:

Some habitat shots at El Hondo from Tuesday: 1. Main lagoon at San Filipe Neri visitor centre virtually dried out 2. Birding in Alicante Province

The second of my three day passes yesterday saw me start out at El Hondo again. The Rollers were again on show at the palm plantation opposite the north gate. There was little change in the birds around San Filipe Neri visitors centre compared with last week- highlights were a singing...

    Birding in Alicante Province

Cheers Mark - might give it a go on Monday combined with an early morning visit to El Hondo, a bit of Robin hunting and an evening up at the lighthouse for Red-necked Nightjars. Was there anything else of interest at Clot? PS Black-necked Grebes have clearly dispersed to larger bodies of water...

    Birding in Alicante Province

Did my first visit of the holiday to El Hondo yesterday and noted the same thing (a bit hard to ignore). Most obvious impact was the lack of duck - no White-headed Duck or Black-necked Grebe and just one of each of Pochard and Red-creasted Pochard. On the positive side there were plenty of...

Azure-winged Magpie safely connected with as per the previous instructions; more were calling from the large villa surrounded by trees immediately to the east. Also a male Montagu's Harrier in the vicinity of the lake's shoreline.

Cheers Mark for confirmation of the AWM location. Last time I had the chat on the inland side of the road approx 200 metres before the lay by but I suppose they frequent the whole area (as do the cruisers ....)
