White-rumped Sandpiper 25.5.18 What a day it was on Friday (25th). I got to Middleton about 7:30am hoping that the pouring rain would bring something good down but never expected a White-rumped Sandpiper! After 3hrs I was soaked through to my underpants despite having a complete set of...

Thanks Nick, that's helpful. It's good to hear straight from the horse's mouth (or in this case the Reserve Manager's mouth!). It's a great reserve and because birders value it so much we are always interested in developments. It'll be interesting to see what impact the flume has over the...

I've heard more than once from the RSPB that the outlet onto private land has been improved to increase the outflow rate with the cooperation of the landowner but I don't know how regularly it's checked.

A couple of pictures of the work putting the flume into the inlet. Looks like it's going to be finished for the weekend, so the water is going to be allowed back in and all the lovely mud is going to disappear. I believe that the intention is to keep water levels high initially to encourage...

No problem Geoff. It's funny, I was talking to Nick Martin about you today! He reckons he first met you at RSPB Sandwell 18yrs ago! I was on the reserve this afternoon but unfortunately I didn't take any photos. The work is due to be completed by the weekend. The flume (basically a narrowing...

I understand that the RSPB are putting a 'flume' into the water channel that is the inlet for the reserve from the river. Contractors due to arrive on Tuesday. It's hoped that it will take out the peaks and pulses that come down the river and whilst not stopping flooding all together the hope is...

There's a new blog covering Middleton Lakes and the other Tame Valley sites. It's called Mercian Birding. Here's a link http://mercianbirding.blogspot.co.uk/ Got to say a big thank you to Tom Perrins for his Tame Valley Birding blog that's kept so many of us informed for so long though.

The Egyptian Geese flew south towards KWP about 3pm in two flocks of 7 & 8. Two of them were Juveniles. I don't recall seeing that many on Middleton before, what are previous numbers like Geoff? Also a lone female Goosander on the river.

Little Stint on the east scrape this afternoon (pic). 2 Ruff on the North Pit & 2 on JWs along with a Dunlin. Great White Egret on on JWs north. A Marsh Harrier was seen over the North Pit & one was reported head towards KWP. This despite the water levels being high and a lot of undergrowth - so...

Sorry Dave - it seems to have moved on pretty damn quick! It's not been seen since Thursday afternoon. It was heading west the last time I saw it so it could be heading your way - keep your eyes peeled!

2 and a LB Dowitcher eh? Very nice! Haven't seen one of those since April 2016 (Rutland Water). I found the Cattle Egret at Middleton at 2:25 (I was thinking it was pretty dead until then too) - I don't know how much you missed it by. Haven't seen much of you lately Geoff - Lincolnshire been...

Here's a picture of the Cattle Egret from Thursday afternoon. It was on the pool to the north of the West Screen on Jubilee Wetlands. It only hung around for about 25 minutes after I found it and then flew west over the canal. I tried but couldn't relocate it.

On Thursday afternoon there was a digger working in the trees on the north east side of Dosthill NR. I assumed that this area was RSPB land but suspected that it wasn't their workers. I later found out from a local that it isn't RSPB land in that area and that somebody has bought it and is...

There was a nice late summer plumage Little Stint on the gravel bar opposite the two benches on Jubilee Wetlands this afternoon before the deluge. Also on the same bar was a Ringed Plover. One of the Great White Egrets was showing well feeding around Jws. On the east scrape was 2 Blackwits, and...

The first Great White Egret for a while turned up on JW today. It spent most of the day in the middle of Jubilee Wetlands. Also 2 Green Sandpiper on the east scrape and one on Dosthill Lake. Also a Redshank on the east scrape. Here's a picture of the GWE with a Heron for size comparison.

A Wood Sandpiper was reported by the RSPB this morning whilst it was raining but I couldn't find it late morning when the rain had stopped. A Greenshank circled JWs for 5 minutes calling constantly but then flew to the south over Warwickshire. Not much more of note about other than a Green...

There was a Barn Owl hunting from the roof of the hide at 4:45 this afternoon - must have been hungry after last night's rain!

    RSPB Middleton Lakes

It was fairly quiet this morning. 8 Dunlin that were feeding on JWs flew off south about 9:30. The Common Sandpiper with the white patch on it's left flank was on the river scrape. 1 ad and 2 juv LRP and 2 Ringed Plover were around. The only other thing of note was an apparent increase in...

There was a Hobby over Dosthill NR this afternoon and a small increase in wader activity on Jubilee Wetlands with 3 Common Sandpipers - 2 on the West Scrape and 1 on Jubilee North near the 2 benches - and 4 Dunlin out in the middle. There were 5 Ringed Plover (1 of which was a juv) and 2 LRP...
