Nice little write-up of the ditch clearance on the BWVCP blog, including this rather smashing photo of Mr Horton: http://blackwatervalleycountryside.wordpress.com/2014/04/16/ditching-in-tices-wood-at-farnham-quarry/#jp-carousel-578 Matt

That was a great weekend, Rich. I remember it well. I am busy on Saturday but already looking forward to some Tice's action on Sunday. Matt

Unfortunately I'm not able to do the Saturday or overnight sessions but will probably be down first thing on Sunday morning. Matt

Tice's Meadow and Tongham GP, Surrey

Nothing much to add to Rich's tally from my late afternoon visit yesterday other than a Green Sand I flushed from the far end of the stream which flew into the workings, and around forty Fieldfare which were flying around evidently looking for a place to roost. When I left soon after 17:30 they...

Sean, I have a selection of phonescoped record shots of the Temminck's. None of great quality but may be better than nothing. Will email them over to you shortly. Matt

Cheers Rich, I feel rather daft now but just something about the light/perspective I guess. In unrelated news I have just cleaned my bins and am going to try and make a point of wearing my glasses more often... ;-) Matt

Cheers chaps, it seems I was getting overexcited! Matt

What do people make of this gull? I photographed it last Sunday evening on one of the posts at the back of the bike pool and initially thought Yellow-legged but realised the dark eye and dull legs are not right for this species. I ruled out Common based on bill length, and because it certainly...

This afternoon (16:00-17:30) - adult YL Gull, 4 Common Sands, 2 Green Sands, 1 LRP, Kestrel, and a Little Egret which was mobbed almost relentlessly by Magpies from the moment it dropped in, which I'd not seen before. Also good numbers of Lapwing and Stock Doves about the place, and Swift and...

Rich, Thanks for the updates and all you're doing. 24th Aug looks good for me at present, will be happy to help out with whatever needs doing. Matt

Quiet this afternoon (16:00-17:45) with just one each of Little Egret and Yellow-legged Gull of note. I called the local police out to see off the scramble bikers who were tearing round the paths again but received a voicemail two hours later to say they couldn't find them. Matt

Hi guys, only just caught up with the conversation, sorry. 100% still in for next week, and more than happy to contribute to petrol. Midnight at Rich H's house on the Thursday (?) also fine! Really looking forward to this one. Matt.

Tice's Meadow and Tongham GP, Surrey

Pretty quiet this afternoon (16:00-17:45): 2 Shelduck (a Tice's tick for me!), 2 Egyptian Geese, at least 6 Common Tern, 3+ Reed Warblers in the reedbed including one showing very close to the path, 1 Lapwing, and at least two lots of Coot chicks. Good numbers of Swifts, Sand and House Martins...

Absolutely agree, Rich, although for certain species I just don't record on Surrey Birders altogether at this time of year as not all the Schedule 1 species seem to have the tick box 'hidden' feature of say the LRPs, and technically could still be seen by anyone. Matt.

Very quiet this afternoon with Dave Smith. 2 Yellow Wags the highlights of my stay (c.15:15-16:30), although Dave reported good Buzzard passage earlier in the afternoon and also the Common Sand in the workings which I was unable to pick up as I think my scope is k-nackered! Matt.

Absolutely incredible hour's birding after work tonight, so good to see Tice's delivering all the goods. Well done to Sean for finding the Grebes, and good to see you all and Neil this evening. The next few weeks could be very interesting, roll on the 24hr springwatch! Matt.

Because of a Mr Walter Tice who used to own the kiln and the hop fields, as they were then. My mum grew up above the shop that is now One Stop amd remembers Mr Tice's vans going past ferrying hops and pickers to and from the fields - now the meadow as we know it. Matt.

Great stuff re: the Pintails, guys. Hoping to get down this weekend, most likely Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning, so if they could stick around until then that'd be great ;-) Rich, definitely count me in for ringing/breakfast on the 21st! Matt.

Tice's Meadow and Tongham GP, Surrey

Many thanks to Rich for organising the walk yesterday. A great turnout and a great day. A brief visit this evening (c.1700-1750) showed the Black-tailed Godwit to be still present feeding in amongst the Wigeon and Canada Geese behind the bike pool. A Great Black-backed Gull flew towards Tongham...

Nice one, Rich - will look forward to reading that. And great to see the Med Gulls, Rich H. Fingers crossed there's one there on Saturday - would be a Surrey first for me. Really looking forward to the walk. Would join you earlier but I'm bringing my other half along so I'll see you on Pea...
