    Astroscope + DSLR = Gallery!

This Robin is in the garden daily, looking scruffy now after a long nesting season and multiple nesting attempts, all of which I think have been unsuccessful as I've seen no young accompanying the adult. Nikon D3300 - SW80ED - 6x7 medium format 2x teleconverter glass mounted into Nikon...

Nice to have a pair of Goldfinches nesting in my garden this year, never had that before. Nikon D3300, SW80ED 600mm with a 2X telenegative taken from an old zoom lens. Not perfectly sharp as this thin branch was swaying around but it's near enough. Paul.

Robin from around 12m range. Nikon D3300 at ISO1600 and SW80ED with a telenegative lens from a 75-150mm EBC X-Fujinon Z lens. Also using the rear group of lenses that sit just behind the shutter blades and this seems to improve sharpness to a visible degree. This group of lenses unscrews from...

Last November I had some builders put together a studio in the garden for me to work in (full time artist). For the last 8 years I've been painting in the spare room which is only about 8ft x 6ft. The studio space is twice the size and located at one end of my garden. I've put floor to ceiling...

Yes, and the rotary washing line is really good too. The washing line is the style that opens out like an upturned umbrella. With the four arms in the folded up position it holds the scope perfectly and I can rotate 360° as well as going from flat to pointing almost vertically up. It's a good...

A little bit of eyepiece projection just for fun. The eyepiece is a microfiche lens assembly and these lenses project a very flat image onto the cameras sensor. Projecting a very flat image is very important with this method. Provides a lot of magnification too, these photos are mostly uncropped...

Finally remembered to put my camera into RAW. Waxwing still here, been here since 14th February now. My tripod is still being used in my art studio so I took this resting the scope on top of a flower pot in a 20mph wind. Nikon D3300 + SW80ED + Fujinon 1.8X TN. Paul.

I was photographing Waxwing in the drizzle today and got this really nice Robin close up. I got the whole bird but went for a crop. Nikon D3300 + SW80ED + 2X Vivitar TC assembly from Pentax 645 medium format. Paul.

Due to the Waxwing, I've had loads of birdwatchers outside my house over the last couple of weeks, a lot with very long expensive lenses so I thought I'd do a comparison. One of these photos is taken with the SW80ED, Nikon D3300 and 1.4XTN at ISO800 - 1/160. Camera was in jpeg mode. The other...

Waxwings here with a nice sunrise this morning which rises at 90° to their position and so lights them up perfectly. All at 600mm with the SW80ED and Nikon D3300. Paul.

Waxwings still turning up here almost daily. Sun is in a decent spot today but the birds are still a way off. Probably at around 2.5X to 3X with the TN and SW80ED for this photo and I had the camera set in jpeg mode (must remember to put it in RAW). Photo uncropped, just resized. Paul.

    Astroscope + DSLR = Gallery!

After not seeing any for a few days we had a small group of 4 Waxwings here this morning. Still just perching at a distance and not feeding anywhere that I can get close to. The Dunnock was watching me take photos from around 3m away, surprised I managed to focus on it but I had extension tube...

Nice photos Jules. It's a shame they weren't feeding in my area, they were just spending a few hours at a time perched at the top of a tall Beech tree. Even at 1200mm I was only able to get these images that are just good enough for record shots. I guess there were places in the vicinity they...

I reported them to my local Dorset Bird Club website and my end of the road where they have been visiting was filled with twitchers for three days solid. Cars lined both sides of the street and big lenses and spotting scopes were everywhere. Didn't tell the neighbours I was the cause of all the...

Had some Waxwings here for the last couple of days. Perching at the top of tall Beech tree though so no chance to get close. Murky with drizzle so even worse chance to capture any of their beauty. Tripod is set up with my digital projector which I use for my paintings so I had to rest the scope...

Dunnock photographed yesterday with SW80ED and Sunagor 100-200mm TN. Wood Mouse on the bird table, I always seem to get them this time of year when it warms up. When a bird comes to the table the mouse just leaps off the side which is quite comical too see it plummet 1.5m to the ground. It then...

Robin with a beak full of spiders and covered in cobwebs just before feeding the chicks. SW80ED and 2" GSO ED barlow. Paul.

Nice photos Mario although the editing is very obvious where you have blurred out the background/foreground on the last three photos. What methods are you using? I'm sure the people here can give you some useful tips. Paul.

Thanks Jules/Cango. Takes a few goes to find the best place to focus and then it's sheer luck that the continuous shutter goes off at the right moment. Did a gaussian blur in Photoshop on a duplicate layer and erased the blur where the bird is. That makes the box look a little further back than...

This is my best one so far. Nice and sunny this morning so with the focal reducer taking the 600mm scope down to 270mm I could use ISO800 and 1/4000sec shutter. Taken from around 5m range. Paul.

    Astroscope + DSLR = Gallery!

Did a quick test with the focal reducer made from a photocopier lens. Gives a 55% reduction so the 600mm SW80ED goes down to 270mm. As I said in the last post, the one I have will focus up to around 8 to 10m and no further, haven't measured exactly. Good for doing anything up close where you...

    Astroscope + DSLR = Gallery!

Well not quite yet. They are ok for close range but I can't get it to focus beyond around 8m with the one I have. It has to be really close to the scope and with the focuser in as far as it will go that's as far away as mine will focus. I have just ordered another one which is around 44mm in...

    Astroscope + DSLR = Gallery!

Did some more flight shots this afternoon and also made a new focal reducer today from an old photocopier/fax machine copy lens. It reduces the 600mm SW80ED down to around 300mm although I need to do an exact test to get the true measurement. Photo is sharp from edge to edge with excellent...

Nailed it Tord, look at that narrow strip in focus. Took loads of in flight photos of our Blue Tits yesterday. For some reason this morning I thought I'd already downloaded them to the computer and I wiped them off the camera. Had some really good ones too. Decided just to go for poses this...
