End of the journey ! I just posted my SkyWatcher SW80ED 600mm for sale. Unfortunately, it has become too heavy and difficult to focus for my capabilities. I enjoyed every minutes of this journey. The photo outings and the countless hours testing and experimenting have been very enjoyable...

Great shot Tord. Your hand holding of the scope amazes me. Here is one to make you smile. I wonder if the stern thinks that the same color post is a member of the family ? Birdbrain ? Taken with the easier to hold PL 100-400mm.

Great shot Tord ! Here in Quebec, we have the Bittern, which is a large bird and the elusive Least Bittern, which is uncommon and difficult to locate - it looks a lot like yours. I was lucky to see a few. I envy you to travel to exotic places like Sri Lanka... I just come back from a birding...

You are nice Dan, thanks ! You are right, the photo clearly shows the details of the bird. If I see it that way, it does the job and it is a nice picture... but it will never win a contest.

Do you really like the steel fence ? I don't. I don't like to show nature with non nature elements. Buildings, posts, fences, wires, feeders... Also, the tail is hidden. Canon 50D, Canon 300mm + 1.4X, ISO 400, 1/250, f/8,0

When I saw the photo, I thaught it was a Kestrel, but it is quite different from the one we have here, the American Kestrel. My photo is not as nice as Dan's but it shows the difference quite clearly.

Hi Paul, Here, they come and go, in groups. In Winter time, we see them in trees that have frozen fruits. In the Spring, they like to eat new flowers and apple orchards are a sure bet. In the Summer and Fall, they like small fruits and berries in trees, not on the ground.

Thanks Dan ! E-M1 Mk I and Pana/Leica 100-400mm at 400mm - ISO 800, 1/640 S., f/6.3. Here are a couple more with the same equipment. As you can see on the second photo, the DOF is very narrow when the lens is wide opened and the bokeh is superb. Good luck with your purchase. Regards J

Nice photos guys. I see that Spring is back in Europe ! It is also Spring in Quebec. Here is a Redhead couple taken at about 75 meters. SW80ED + 1.6X TN, ISO 800, 1/1000 s. With results like this, I don't think I will be able to discard the SW80ED for long range bird photography...

You seem to have reached a nice compromise. I wish I could get my 400mm to deliver. I carry it using a home made binocular style harness and the light weight is really nice. I can also carry it all day on my shoulder attached to a tripod.

You are right about lenses. Like Dan wrote, we are not getting younger. Portability and autofocus are arguments that speak to many of us.... As far as I am concerned, the Canon 400mm is not a replacement for my scope. The bad news is that I find it more and more difficult to get perfect...

In Canada, we have the American Dipper. It is a rare bird that lives in Western Canada. Yours is dark brown, ours is dark grey, almost blue.
