The birds & wildlife of Gateshead

Fair enough, you see the point I was making, that's all I can ask. Though as a Gateshead birder who enjoyed contributing to the birding and banter of this thread (pre Hawk-gate) I think it has a lot more to do with me than you and a lot of others who got involved in the first instance and just...

The birds & wildlife of Gateshead

I find this a bit hypocritical as it was you taking a cheap shot at Steve on another thread which caused more conflict and ultimately led to his suspension from BF, hardly adult stuff from you either so maybe you should take your own advice.

Sorry Adam, my comment is meant tongue-in-cheek, a bit of an in-joke with Steve and Rob in the context of the year tick contest as they are not likely to get it, nothing more. I only have second-hand info on the actual sighting but as far as I'm aware it was just a fly-over so probably unlikely...

And white wagtail puts him half a tick ahead;) I possibly had the merlin again on thursday at lockhaugh (what a fantastic couple of hours raptor watching that was, tell you later) but at one point the kestrel pair were displaying around the monument and a third falcon (?) mobbed them briefly...

Kite query Update Well folks the plot thickens on this one. I've had confirmation that a black kite did indeed escape from Beamish about three months ago (with jesses), was seen to be chased off by the resident pair in that area and has not been seen since, presumed perished. Also confirmed...

The birds & wildlife of Gateshead

Hi June, yes the bird Ron photographed is an escaped Harris Hawk which caused much debate a few weeks ago but is seen regularly at Watergate Park, usually found in America but used widely in this country as a pigeon scarer! The bird I saw was most definitely a kite as I watched it circling above...

Not another one? Another Gateshead mystery raptor to report. Last Thursday at Lockhaugh at one point I had three kites soaring together, one of which didn't have white wing patches and was noticeably smaller than the others. Otherwise it looked pretty much like the others. Black Kite crossed...

nice end to a poor day Aye what a surprise that was. Was outside with the bairns late afternoon when a pair of soaring kites were joined by a buzzard. They drifted right overhead in glorious sunshine and I couldn't resist going for my bins, and as often happens they were soon joined by more...

Count yourself lucky Ron, every time I whip MY camera out, it's the birds that disappear :-O Good to see a stonechat was found yesterday at Greenside after all the old regulars had seemingly perished during the harsh winter last year:t:

The final say? Disappointed for you Steve:-C but after speaking to you earlier I think this episode has come to the correct conclusion. Along with probably many others I learned the hard way that you have to be 100% in your own mind to claim the tick, if you don't get enough time to ID a bird...

And furthermore . . . . Just to add a bit of extra spice to the whole situation, I've been doing my own investigations on a bird I saw today and am almost sure I had a rough-legged buzzard overhead at 2.40pm. It was certainly a buzzard sp. in very good light but at a good height in a fast...

The birds & wildlife of Gateshead

Steve I think you're baffling yourself with too much information mate, forget the photos and think back to the bird you saw in flight, jizz is totally different, harris hawk (fast wingbeats of a hunter) and rough legged buzzard (slow harrier-like flapping)are totally different, as are the way...

Think I'd stick with RL Buzzard on the evidence of the previous photos from October, could well have the same bird on reverse migration.:t:

Had nice views of a peregrine after you left George, soaring with 4 buzzards for a short while then came overhead in pursuit of a curlew.

If I were you I would wait until he's at work before gloating with any new sightings, so as not to give him the option of 'throwing a sickie' ;)

Aye, lovely pics Steve, I think as the kites are so familiar sometimes we forget to take a close look but these shots are a great reminder of what beauties they are.

I like your golden plover shot even better, lovely timing to get the composition. And I hear you are just a shoveler short of being Gatesheads No. 1, still time for Steve to cancel his May holiday :-O

Did you take that shot from the wall we were at the other week? If so it's a bloody good pic considering the distance.

Spring already? Nice to get another Gateshead lifer yesterday with the glaucous:t: I see you couldn't resist going for the crest again, and excellent results! Who was it had the photo of it perched on the fence? Wouldn't mind having another look at that one. Possible chiffchaff early...
