The birds & wildlife of Gateshead

As per latest Birdwatching magazine, a Lesser Whitethroat has been wintering at Ryton. The photo on the letters page isn't quite good enough to tell if its a Siberian type, but must be a chance with others wintering elsewhere in the country. Mark

Although I'm sure you are a responsible photographer, it may be best not to add your photos of Red Kite on the nest to a public website. With Red Kite being a Schedule 1 breeding species, a licence is actually needed to photograph them at the nest. Maybe you already have a licence, but your...

Great record from Chopwell on Saturday with the fly-over White-tailed Eagle. Well done to the observer (whoever he may be) - first seen in County Durham since 1915! Mark

Interesting points Steven. For the purist birder, I'd say you should watch and enjoy the bird first, photos are a secondary benefit (if you get the chance). But some get more enjoyment out of the photo than getting the ID right/watching the bird, so it really depends on where you stand. Nothing...

As an additional opinion, I'd go for Harris's Hawk. It's definitely not a Rough-leg with that restriction of white on the rump - juv Rough-leg has a dark band on a white tail, not an all dark tail and white rump. The size and structure doesn't look good for a Hen Harrier - wings too broad and...

Who's clearing the ponds Steve? I thought Gateshead Council would be reluctant to undertake the work with all the cutbacks etc. Mark

The birds & wildlife of Gateshead

Hi Steve, No problem! ID'ing birds from a single photo is never easy, and especially so with Redpolls. To me, the primary projection still looks rather short for a Mealy, but I've been getting a bit weary looking at Redpolls lately. Redpolls are all just blurring into one (which is maybe the...

The birds & wildlife of Gateshead

I think your photo above captioned as Mealy Redpoll is actually a Lesser. Not the best of angles to see the full wing structure, but it does appear to have relatively short wings and little primary projection. Compare it to the wing structure on the attached photo (one of Ray Scotts - hope...
