You are right with both species and the Med Gull does look like a 2nd winter though I'm not sure if the Common Gull might be an adult winter.

For what its worth I must say when I saw the photo's i thought it made change to see photo's of such an obvious Goshawk instead of the usual is it or is it just a Sparrowhawk. That said i'm certainly no expert on Goshawks i could count on my fingers the amount i've seen.

Ah i see what you mean, it just seemed a little odd that there wasnt much info about the sighting and given what day it was i couldnt help but wonder.

Does anyone actually know anymore about it? As the day went on I couldnt help feeling that it might be an April fool but surely getting to the stage where its put out on national services (Birdguides I saw it on) is taking it a bit far I certainly considered going and I'm sure some people...

It will more than likely be an escaped Falconers bird I think they are one of the most common species for Falconers to keep and seem to be fairly regular escapes.

Its a tricky one, I have to admitt I'm guilty of always going for the photo first in the assumption that'll help me get the ID later which has worked for me before and I suppose has for you this time but as we've seen photo's can be very misleading at times where as the bird in the flesh is less...

Probably the Newcastle utd team;) Seriously though if they are jesses than thats got to make Harris Hawk likely but its difficult to be sure that they are jesses( i hadnt noticed them either). I agree with Mouldy what you saw in the field is probably more important that what the photo's show...

Yeah looking at those pics from October I reckon it looks near enough the same, suprising how Harrier like it looks in a couple of the shots just goes to show how the camera can lie.

Been having a look at what else it could be,what about a Harris Hawk? It seems to look very dark overall apart from the thin white rump I dont think Hen harrier or RL Buzzard would normally look this uniformly dark.

Doesnt look quite right for RL Buzzard to me either i agree it looks more like a white rump than the tail band that said I think it looks a bit big and bulky for a Harrier also looks very dark apart from the rump.
