This is another complex one (and the usual caveats apply as to how reliable my grasp of the issues is compared to others on here): originally there was one species, Myiagra hebetior, known as Velvet Flycatcher. Three subspecies, M. h. hebetior, M. h. eichhorni and M. h. cervinicolor. After two...

So Hirundo tahitica (Pacific Swallow) is now called Tahiti Swallow, while the name Pacific Swallow will apply to Hirundo javanica, which is a new scientific name for what was previously most of the subspecies but not the nominate one. I'm not speaking as an expert taxonomist here, but I'm not a...

The IOC's stated reason for the change is "to align with other major world bird lists", so unless you think the IOC have transcribed one of the names incorrectly, all complaints should be directed to the people behind those other lists rather than the IOC. The new names may be forgettable, but...

Western being Sierra Leone to Togo, Eastern being bits of Nigeria and all points south-east of that. The Birdlife distribution maps suggest there a clear break between the two, the gap being a Yellow-billed Barbet-free zone.

So if I'm reading the spreadsheet right that's Taiwan, China and the Himalayas in the new species, with the very northern bit of China and the entire of the rest of the world remaining as Spotted. Sula and Sulawesi into one species, the rest of the world remains Slender-billed. Except the 2...

    Latest IOC Diary Updates

The IOC diary is intended for people who see changes to taxonomic order as important and changes to English names as less so. Otherwise they wouldn't mention the changes in order. Personally I would have no objection to having two threads one for taxonomic order changes and the other for splits...

I don't know what IOC have decided (the wording seems to hint it's not identical to Clements) but here's what Clements 2023 says for what it's worth (I think 6215 is a typo for 6315 or possibly 6314):

It was in the October Clements update so the outcome, but not the workings, can be seen there. I don't know if Cornell made the info available when they decided to apply the change? Presumably they showed it to the folks at IOC. In their update it's described as "synthetic work by E. Miller...
