I think all 3 of these are Hawthorn Shieldbugs, the nymphs of this species can vary from green to red, see; http://www.britishbugs.org.uk/gallery/heteroptera/Pentatomoidea/pentatomoidea.html for some photos of both colour forms. Stuart

Thanks for the replies. I contacted the Essex heteroptera recorder, here is his reply; "I've not seen many records from the county, but it's certainly around. It's got at least as far as the top end of Cambridgeshire now, and filling the gaps with common sense suggests it's probably now...

Box Bug I was surprised to beat 2 adult Box Bugs from Oak trees at the Northern edge of Basidon in Essex last week, I was wondering if anyone knows haw far they have spread & how many Essex records there have been. I have attached a couple of photos. Stuart

The shieldbug in question is on the leaf behind the one with the rhopalid bug on, it is mainly in shadow & not that easy to see. I would agree that it is Nezara viridula. Stuart

I found a number of eurygaster nymphs, 4th instar & younger, while sweeping tall sand dune grasses beside the coastal footpath in East Kent. I retained a couple of nymphs, both 4th instars, to try & rear through, initially feeding them on the grasses they were swept from, then gave them a choice...

Spent the day on Martin Down last week, I managed to find just 2 shieldbugs but they were both new for me; the tiny Negro Bug Thyreocoris scarabaeoides plus the rare Conthophorus impressus which I managed to find under the trailing stems of Bastard-toadflax, which itself was very hard to find as...

Success this time around! I swept an area of boggy habitat in the New Forest at the end of July catching a number of nymphs of 3 different species. I took one specimen, a final instar, of each species home to see if I could get an id & to attempt to rear them. I fed them on willowherb sp. from...

I spotted an adult Legnotus limbosus on a roadside bank, which contained a profusion of Goosegrass, although the bug itself was on a different plant. I then noticed 3 dead adults at the bottom of the bank in the loose dusty earth, at the edge of the road. A couple of nymphs were shaken from the...

The shieldbugs have survived the cold weather ok, there were at least 8 Pied & 2 Blue Shieldbugs in the patch of White Dead-nettle. One of the Blue Shieldbugs had caught a small, metalic blue beetle see attached photos. Also found 2 Pied Shields at another part of the reserve, they were both on...

We had a little snow but it didn't settle, a bad frost last night however. Hopefully they can find some sheltered spots at ground level beneath the plants. Stuart.

During a walk round my local nature reserve yesterday, I found at least 6 Pied Shieldbugs on a patch of mixed White Dead-nettle & Stinging Nettle exactly where I had seen them a couple of years ago. While sitting / laying down trying to get some photos I noticed a Blue Shieldbug on the same...

Found a Blue Shieldbug Zicrona cearulea at Cornard Mere, my local Suffolk Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve on Saturday 7th.It was spotted purely by chance resting on a leaf of Hedge Bindweed as I walked past, interesting as I spent a good length of time there last Autumn with my sweep net hoping to...

I believe this is a Sloe Bug, in winter colours, on account of the very pale tip to the scutellum & the black & white barred antennae. Stuart.

Yes you are correct, it is indeed a Sloe Shieldbug. Stuart.

A trip to Sussex found me sweeping what i believe to be Wavy Hair-grass Deschampsia flexuosa (but i'm no expert on grasses) on dry acid grassland and found Bishop's Mitre (few) plus a single specimen of each of Neottiglossa pusilla (1 photo)& what i consider to be Eurygaster testudinaria (2...
