    From a quick read I understand they propose to split D. certhia into 7 species (including the juruanus taxon). The main reason is if I read well that D. hoffmansi only differs 1.95% mtDNA from D. picumnus, while the 7 taxa within D. certhia differ an average 2.4%. Obviously, an alternative...

    In fact, Freeman and Montgomery (2017) did not analyze voice, they showed a different response in playback experiments. Vocal differences have been described elsewhere prior to these playback experiments.
