One gosling on College today, being given a hard life by the dominant swan. I expect its short life will be over by now.

    Falmouth Birding

Had a walk up college lunchtime. Saw a largish wader that at my level (and no bins) was unidentified. Then just read Dans post so more than likely the Black Tailed Godwit. Was feeding in the shallows, (plenty of shallows) west of the island.

    Falmouth Birding

Had a little wander up College lunchtime. Went from Argal end along the back muddy path. Stopped and had a look at the natives from the first gap in the trees. Then when I reached the second gap and stopped not much more than 15 feet away from me from the shallows up went a bittern. Never seen...

Yes certainly looks like a species of Grey Mullet. Also present in Swanpool are Flounder and Eels. Have seen them gulping air on the surface when there has been an algal bloom that takes the oxygen out of the water. Not seen any other species though.

The fish is allmosat certainly a Grey Mullet, you can just about see the stripey markings in the first pic. I know there are plenty of Mullet in Swanpool but not so sure about Bass. There are several species of Grey Mullet including Thick lipped, Thin lipped and Golden all have the stripey...

    Falmouth Birding

Having a chat to a fishing pal up Argal lunchtime. Says he saw a biggish raptor come down, take a good sized fish out of the water, Says he has seen Ospreys doing it abroad and he felt sure in himself that thats what it was. What do you guys think.

    Falmouth Birding

Loads of birds on College today. Just walking round without bins looking for fungi. 5 Grey heron on the island, loads of gulls including LBB, 30 plus Canada geese plus the usual Mallards and Moorhens. Oh and a Kingfisher on the dam stretch. With the water so low the exposed areas are littered...

5 cygnets on Argal. Grebe still sitting, wont be long before theres a few little stripey balls of fluff. Saw a couple of goslings on College last week. They were being harried all over by the male swan. I expect they are no more.

    Falmouth Birding

I suppose the main thing that made me think they were goosander was my earlier experience. Earlier in the year I reported that I thought I had seen a shelduck flying on Argal and was told that it was quite likely a goosander. When I initially saw these two birds my thoughts turned to shelduck as...

    Falmouth Birding

Just got back from a days fishing on Argal and I'me quite excited. Late afternoon saw two ducks flying south coming towards me. As they came close, about 40 - 50 yards away I could see they were something different. I'me sure they were goosander, if so the first I have seen. Is it likely. PS As...

I am in need of help. Trying to identify birds from their song/calls. I have great difficulty in pairing the actual voice with the desciptions in books. Anything would be helpfull. I know you can get a phone AP (whatever that is) but appart from my PC I live in the dark ages.

Yes quite a sight when you are so close. They must have been using it for some time. I saw them about 6 years ago when visiting.

    Falmouth Birding

Hi Samuel I have recently found quite a few dead frogs at College Reservoir. Have just reported it to the email address in your link. At first I thaught it might be Heron leftovers but reading that article I fear not.

    Falmouth Birding

Not up to speed on recognition as most of you guys so I suspect it could have been. Seen plenty of shelduck when I lived on a boat at Wier Quay on the river Tamar and that was my initial impression with the short look that I had. Fished Argal today and was kept company most of the morning by a...
