No need for all this expense Strong string and fabric/plastic sheeting- if there are supports to which to tie them. If not, you’ll need to construct a rudimentary frame. Sometimes, this can be done on the spot. (Think Bear Grylls.) Remember gusts of wind ! I’ve used a large poncho, head...

Re Tom's #1212 Tom: I so liked your photo of the Magpies, that I've tarted it up a bit. [If you wish its deletion, I will comply.] It would make an even more classic photo, if you could go back to that spot and get some shots with these wonderful and subtle colours . . . the low, side-on...

Tom: you may just use John (!). I stand to be shot down on any of these, as I’m just going by the book. At least you'll have a starting point for your own image searches. In your #870, I think it’s one of the Black Swallowtails- Papilio maacki. In #877, the LH shot is of a Clouded Yellow...

That is fabulous recompense for all the times you visit. It makes everything worthwhile, when you turn up something as great as this on one of your regular haunts; even more so, when it’s a lifer. Those are probably some of the best 30 minutes you have ever spent. Did you ever think you might...

Tom: the LH butterfly in your #614 is an Asian Comma Polygonia c-aureum. That in the RH shot is probably the Asian/Chinese Yellow/Xuthus (take your pick!) Swallowtail Papilio xuthus.

Butterfly from Tom's #596 Yes, Tom, it's a butterfly ! I think it's a Chinese Peacock Papilio bianor, one of the swallowtails. There are several similar.

I know how you feel, Tom. One of my patches was 'lost', with change of ownership, in the last few years. It creates a hole in one's birding life, similar to the death of a friend. Is there anywhere locally to which some of these birds can relocate ?

I sent you an mp3 of the call, Gretchen. Didn't you get it ? If not, I'll resend. (Have you changed your email address? If so, PM it to me.) What you've put here is mainly the song, with some tacking that I'm not sure about. Mark will tell us.

Hybrid Panda ? Not quite the right thread for this but, inspired by Sandy (?) (help!), below is what one sees on exiting the airport at Chengdu. Is it Giant, or Red, or some ghastly mutation ? Entrancing, in a bizarre sort of way, though.

Varied Tit That bird is a looker ! I must say, when I'm in China, the tits and their various (sorry!) races take on a new dimension, often seeming to be almost new species and making me perk up my interest in the family. Great photo. Can't wait to get back, when/if health permits.

Oriental Greenfinch at Beidaihe Hi Gretchen. I saw several of these near the featured pagoda, south of the plain and close to the coast road. We (can you recognise the other birder?) were hoping for cranes. The Greenfinches were usually on wires, around the crop fields, at the bottom of the...
