Hi Tom, Huge congratulations with the new book... it's simply superb! I can't begin to say how much you are going to be missed.. not only by your fellow birders in China but also all the followers of your thread - one of the best on Birdforum for sure - and perhaps most of all by your students...

    Dalian (Jinshitan) Birding Reports

Hi Tom, Looks like a good Black-throated Thrush to me.. congratulations! Black-throated is the scarcest of the 4 winter thrushes in Beijing (after Naumann's, Red-throated and Dusky), so it's always a good day to see one here, too.. T

    Dalian (Jinshitan) Birding Reports

Tom, Many congratulations on completing the second edition of your book... being a proud owner of the first edition, I know for sure that the second edition will be an invaluable resource for anyone birding in Liaoning and, in fact, anywhere in NE China! A brilliant contribution to the...

Excellent stuff..! How often do you see Treecreeper, Tom? It's pretty rare in Beijing with only a handful of records..

    Dalian (Jinshitan) Birding Reports

Hi Tom, Just wanted to say a big congratulations for completing the book..! It will be, by far, the best guide to birds of the Dalian region and by having it translated into Chinese, it will be the perfect complement to your education work, enthusing a new generation of Chinese about wild...

    Dalian (Jinshitan) Birding Reports

Hi Tom, I agree that visible migration is awesome in eastern China.. and it's great motivation to learn flight calls! Even from my apartment block in Beijing I am hearing pipits, buntings, larks etc and last night a Little Owl (new for the patch). I agree with others' comments that your...

    Dalian (Jinshitan) Birding Reports

Hi Owen, Welcome to birding and to the China pages of BirdForum, some of the finest on this website! East Asian buntings are tough, and there is no shame at all in making mistakes - all of us, no matter how long we have been birding, misidentify birds - part of the challenge! We have very few...

WOWOWOW! Congratulations Tom...!! I know how excited you were that morning and I would have been, too... Swinhoe's Rail is *extremely* difficult to see anywhere... and, as you know, I am still waiting..! Streaked Reed Warbler next...

I agree with Dev about 1 and 2. But I think 3,4 and 5 are juveniles (yellow base to the bill and fresh plumage). Number 3 is probably a male (few bands on tail) and 4 is probably a female due to multiple narrow bands on the wings and tail. Not sure about 5 (possibly female, too). T

Brilliant stuff, Tom! That second PG Tips image is the best photo of that species I have seen... superb! So pleased you were able to recover those photos...

Great shearwater pics, Tom. And right now must be prime time for pelagic species, especially with a typhoon off Japan.. would love to be there now..!

    Dalian (Jinshitan) Birding Reports

Great stuff, Tom!! We are really just scratching the surface with so few observers but what you are contributing to the knowledge of the birds of Dalian is immense. Keep it up! :t:

    Dalian (Jinshitan) Birding Reports

Congrats with the thrush, Tom! And what a cracking Little Curlew, too... I think the Aussies have satellite-tagged some this year, so hopefully we'll be able to learn more about their migration route.. I've only ever seen 2 - one at Pikou, Liaoning and one at Miyun in Beijing (spookily, both...

    Dalian (Jinshitan) Birding Reports

Hi Tom, Agree that your wagtail is a lugens.. a nice male! They breed in Japan and are scarce winter visitors to Beijing (Paul Holt has found a handful wintering along a small river near his home for the last two winters). Others probably go undetected in NE China, so I guess they must come...

About time a Snowy Owl turned up in Beijing...! Gyr was photographed just a few hundred km north of Beijing two winters ago. One day! ;)

Hi Mark - which 4? I am guessing you have seen LE Owl and Harlequin but the others are pretty mega..! :t:

    Dalian (Jinshitan) Birding Reports

Wow... that is brilliant! We saw small flocks of half a dozen or so in early October at Laotieshan and, most of the time, they flew out to sea a few hundred metres and then returned... they seemed very reluctant to leave.. Astonishing to see a flock of this size in Liaoning. It's only a...

    Dalian (Jinshitan) Birding Reports

Yes, absolutely right. It's Taiga Flycatcher that has black uppertail coverts and an all-dark bill..! RBF is exactly how Mark describes. At least I got the RBF call right - should be slow enough to count the notes. Good luck! Terry

    Dalian (Jinshitan) Birding Reports

Tom, I would scrutinise any October Taiga Flycatchers carefully to check for Red-breasted. Slightly different call (slower, so that you can count the notes) and they have black uppertail coverts, an all black bill and generally look 'warmer' brown (ie less grey). There are several records for...

    Dalian (Jinshitan) Birding Reports

Brilliant, Tom. And just reward for working a 'patch'. Jinshitan is superbly located on the flyway along the peninsula to Laotieshan, so almost everything will come to you given enough time... still banking on you finding a Streaked Reed Warbler.. :)

    Dalian (Jinshitan) Birding Reports

Nice one Tom! Lovely pics. I would say it's probably a 3cy bird (2nd summer) judging by the dark on the wing. Great find! T

    Dalian (Jinshitan) Birding Reports

Hi Tom, The cetacean could be Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphin (Sousa chinensis). They are very pale and larger than Finless Porpoise. According to the Mammals of China (Smith and Xie) their range does not reach as far north as Liaoning but that does not mean they don't occur and, of course...

Congrats Tom - Brent Geese a superb record! What will be next? Hoping you see a Streaked Reed Warbler or Swinhoe's Rail... :)
