    Dalian (Jinshitan) Birding Reports

Maybe I'll have to make a birding trip up to there once cross border travel becomes a thing again! Right now no direct flights to/from the USA from here and the US Department of State warns that most places have a forced two week quarantine, at your own expense, if you make an intermediate stop...

Thanks Tom, They didn't show which edition is was when I looked at it before, so I wasn't sure if it was the correct one. I've got a copy on order now.

Hi Tom, Could you post the ISBN for the 2nd Edition? I can find listings easily enough, but only one says which edition it is and that one is the first edition. Other people not used to worrying about which edition might accidentally order the wrong one. BTW, I might be ordering some more...

    Dalian (Jinshitan) Birding Reports

Considered a winter vagrant but I have recorded with photo as late as March in Panjin area. Could be an individual that was injured and unable to leave the area or just decided that it liked it there and stayed. Count or don't count? Each person has to make their own decision, but my general...

Ah, the domestic or wild question to struggle with! When is it a Rock Dove and when just a domestic Pigeon? Here, are those wild or domesticated Mallard? The crested Myna are one that I go back and forth on. They are not common here but I do see two to four together often enough to think...

    Dalian (Jinshitan) Birding Reports

Hi fellows. I just got back from my day trip to Jinshitan. Friends of my wife were going anyway to settle a real estate deal and offered to let us hitch a ride. Hence I had to settle for what I got as far as birding spots, but it worked out well. Lancy, I don't know how long it has been...

    Dalian (Jinshitan) Birding Reports

Hi Lancy, The Panjin - Yingkou area happens to have a good size breeding population of Saunder's Gull and the other two are common here also. The best places that I have around here for almost always having Saunder's Gull are the Yingkou Wetland Park, which is at the mouth of the Liao River...

Hopefully some action towards protection and even some restoration of tidal mudflats comes of the governmental changes. I was at Yingkou yesterday and infilling of marsh was evident around the industrial park that already exists there and bulldozers busily cutting a new roadbed. Also this pic...

Good to hear from you again, Tom! Your reminding me of bucket list items. Jasper, Banff, Yukon and on up into Alaska is a trip my middle brother and I considered three years ago. Unfortunately he couldn't get the time off of work. Still might do it on my own next time I am back in the States.

Great to hear from you, Tom! Nice shot of the Dusky Grouse. Grouse tend to stay so well hidden that you almost step on them before they scare the wits out of you when they break.

Many thanks, Tom for the being one of the anchors of the China patch here on the Forum. Especially though for all the help and encouragement that you have given me in getting started in the last year. For me to be involved in any kind of social networking is a rare thing indeed and I must say...

    Dalian (Jinshitan) Birding Reports

I have both the Chinese and English versions of Tom's book and I extend my congratulations for a job well done. The Chinese version helps a lot in sharing with the family just what I am up to and Tom's introductory material is very good for explaining the importance of conservation and why I...

Ooh, nice, a Peregrine nest! I've only spotted such once, in America, and they were a good 300+ meters down the cliff face and on the opposite canyon wall. The Dawa government in its' "Beautiful Dawa" campaign has recently put up some similar signage, hopefully not also stolen from you.

The voice would tell for certain whether BBW or MW. Without that I still lean towards BB. BB voice is similar to the Oriental W. I recently picked up but Tom's definitely has a dark stripe that my OW lacked. OW was also quite large for a warbler.

I agree with you on that, Tom. There are indeed some that you can still be sure of on the call, but in general I would rather use the call as further verification not as the primary. A few are just so distinctive that you can be sure, Common Cuckoo, Hoopoe, Ring Neck Pheasant, for instance...

Well that is embarrassing. I should have noticed that it was indeed a Japanese Grosbeak, but blew right through it. Clear as day! As for the White-throated Rock Thrush... If I only had an RMB for everytime that I been standing there entranced only to remember just as the bird in question...

All very true, Tom. Sometimes we forget our own histories. I grew up in Allegheny Mountains in Pennsylvania and most people now just see the green carpet of trees covering the mountains everywhere and don't realize that only about a hundred years ago the Alleghenies in PA were almost totally...

Looking good, Tom. I haven't had any Swift/Swallow/Martin or Egret yet up here, but hope to soon. Of course the wetland they were all using last season is not looking good for this year, so not sure how many I will be seeing. BTW, I would really like to buy at least a couple of copies of...

Nice find, Tom! Send them up my way! I will miss your reports from Dalian as well as your help with ID on new birds for me. I suppose it is too much to hope for someone to take over your reporting from there.

Your sightings are getting my hopes up for some increased numbers here in the Panjin area soon! I am hoping that the predicted warming trend will melt off the ice in the next couple of weeks and attract some of those migrating waterbirds.

Nice collection. I saw that your Blue-Rock Thrush got a Rare Bird notice in eBird. Cold front is late in arriving, so I think I will head out as the next week promises to be too cold for me to venture very far.

That is indeed cold for Dalian! Your list looks pretty typical of here two or three weeks ago.

    Dalian (Jinshitan) Birding Reports

I wasn't actively into birding during the one year that I spent there, but had recently been thinking that Dalian Kai Fa Qu should be a good location. Good one on the Scoters.
