    Western Scotland birding

The West Highland Way is great but it gets very busy around Milngavie to Carbeth unless you start very early in the day. My last birding up there I passed a group of young German lads with a blaring radio on, seems to rather miss the whole point?

I've PM'd further details, prefer not to post exactly where the breeding Cuckoos are.

    Western Scotland birding

Repeated last spring's visit to west Lomondside yesterday where I was delighted to find the Cuckoo pair in the same trees as before. I also counted at least three separate Tree Pipits and a Whinchat plus supporting appearences by tons of Skylarks, Meadow Pipits and Stonechats. A Jay flew past me...

That's a pretty good haul! There are lapwings on the farmland north of Glasgow albeit low numbers at any one place this year so far - saw one from the train between Lenzie and Croy the other day. The biggest numbers I tend to see are at Newshot Island in winter.

    Western Scotland birding

I went to the other end of Clyde region and did a walk from Croy to the canal and upper Kelvin. Got two year ticks in Whitethroat and Sedge Warbler which interestingly were site ticks too, plus Sand Martins and Swallows over the canal. No solid Grasshopper Warblers for me yet this year but a...

    Western Scotland birding

Second visit of the year to Balloch and the Loch Lomond shores, to see what migrants have turned up so far. In the woods in order of numbers I heard Willow Warbler, Chiffchaff and Blackcap with good viewings of male and female of the latter, first time I've sighted them this year although heard...

If you have a scope then Cloch Point or Longhaugh Point are good south side, Ardmore Point is also good but north bank of the Clyde. Not been to Saltcoats so can't comment.

I appreciate you are trying to be helpful but I'm sure I remember you getting in a car to drive to Norfolk on NYD. By chance that's where I bought the scope and the journey home took a bus and FIVE trains one of which was the jam-packed Stansted Airport service (which I had to stand on). Door to...

    Western Scotland birding

True but I'm on public transport and/or foot and a scope and tripod is a lot to manage. Train doors, ticket barriers, people getting on with bikes and on.

    Western Scotland birding

First singing Chiffchaff of the year heard this morning along the Forth and Clyde canal. :) Also several Yellowhammers, Skylarks and a late-ish pair of Goldeneye.

I'm sure I've seen people doing sea-watches with a scope wedged between their knees so I want to experiment with that even though I did get a tripod.

    Western Scotland birding

I acquired a scope the other day so compiling a list of suitable sites to try it out...really want to try my luck at Cloch Point as the only time I went there before I couldn't make out anything out at sea. Lochwinnoch has the obvious attraction of the train station on the doorstep.

    Western Scotland birding

I caught up with some LTDs in the mouth of the Tweed yesterday. Doesn't get me a Scottish year tick unfortunately!

    Western Scotland birding

Dunno, I started birding at the golf course so that slowed me down. If you press on, probably sounds right.

    Western Scotland birding

I've done this from Bishopton train station, use Ferry Road to cross the mway then an immediate left and follow the track past the golf club. You can also access just a bit further along if you carry straight on at Dove Cottage although when I did this I think the tide was in and you couldn't...

Which way was the diver flying?
  17. LittleBitOfBreadNoCheese

    Western Scotland birding

That's where I was looking but sadly that little bay was frozen, at one point a female Goldeneye flew in to land and had to bank sharply and turn around.

Sounds great Michael! I was at Loch Lomond Shores today in shockingly low temperatures. I'd hoped to catch a Long-tailed Duck but I was out of luck on that one. I did manage 7 new Balloch ticks though and one cracking closeup encounter with a Lesser Redpoll feeding on the ground right in front...

Lochwinnoch probably best avoided today, in the news for the wrong reasons! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3gydzw7p6po

I think I caught up with these birds (Waxwings) this morning at the Botanic Gardens. Life tick for me :).
  21. LittleBitOfBreadNoCheese

    Western Scotland birding

Its possible I missed them staying on the same side of Great Western Road, but it was getting pretty wet by the time I left anyway so maybe activity had died down.

    Western Scotland birding

Not been to Bingham in a while so wandered over but no joy on the Waxwings (or the RND)... probably waiting for me to go.

Late catching up with this but just noted on October's 'Grapevine' that Hogganfield has its first ever Little Egret on Oct 23rd. https://www.birdsinclyde.scot/october-2023.html
  24. LittleBitOfBreadNoCheese

    Western Scotland birding

Yes I also got my first Fieldfares today on the path from Cadder to Torrance, a lot of them flocking around. Met another birder who'd seen a Waxwing but I had no such luck/skill.

    Western Scotland birding

Redwings seem to have arrived in my neck of the wood (Glasgow area) in the last 2 or 3 days. First one I had in 2021 was the 14th, not sure about last year.
