As it seems quiet on here - the Common Crane was still on the east shore of Upper, viewable from the dam, at 18.45 at least.

Looks like a 'scaup-faced' female Tufted. Small bump on back of head will be the tuft.

Good views from the dam yesterday evening c.6.15. As I was at BGCC at the time news was put out it seemed rude not to go.

Suspect you are correct, think it was there most of the day although didn't see it myself as was at work. My first Osprey was at Bittell in Sept '73 so probably the bird you saw.

Seems an odd excuse! Perhaps they should try a bit harder :-O Can we just import a few scare and rare species if we fail to see anything interesting for a few months?

If they have a permit then probably not as that is one of the conditions of a permit being granted - no release of news. However it isn't 100% adhered to, just I guess nothing out of the ordinary at the moment other than the Brent Goose (which we all know about). News of megas is sometimes...

I think you you and Keith are both saying the same thing - just with words in a different order :t: I think we all (birders, togs and hybrids) agree that disturbance of any sort within the area by anyone should be kept to an absolute minimum, if not zero. Those who wait by the roadside are...

Shrike seen at about 11.20-11.25 this morning, although distant beyond oak tree in centre of field.

    Bittell Reservoirs and Hopwood area

As has previously been said, the area is used by dog-walkers, falconers and shooters. I don't know to what level, but I'd suggest that any of these groups is likely to inadvertently disturb the shrike during the course of their 'activities'. Any such disturbance will be annoying for birders and...

GGS did approach to within 100-120 yards this morning between 10.15-10.45.

Spent 90 minutes around Bittell today as I didn't fancy sitting in traffic caused by the M42 incident, which looked likely if I tried to get to Upton. I went first to Upper, where the lack of wind saw the sailing fraternity seemingly taking part in the nautical equivalent of a slow-bicycle...

Keith, Photo 3 is a Chiffchaff. Dark legs, no obvious super. Nice photo though Cheers Mike

Not totally sure of the reasons, but I recall the lack of parking was one argument put forward within the paperwork that came with the last permit (that I declined to renew). This covered both the parking available within the sailing/fishing club itself and also on the narrow roads bordering the...

Right on both counts Sy. It's a good place to walk round all-year round really, but parking is something of an issue. Not sure how easy it is to get a permit these days (gave mine up a couple of years ago as a) I didn't get there much and b) you're not supposed to broadcast news of any bird...

Also heard from one of the permit holders that people were getting in to get closer to it. It was 40 yards from the road for g*d's sake, how close do you want to get?
