Avoch is great, especially living right on the shore. However, Marcus lives opposite me on the south side and seems to get even more birds!! Not that I'm competitive or anything, no siree, not me <whistles innocently> I have just seen clouds of fieldfares above Dochgarroch so another sign that...

I haven't heard anything for a while. I have looked everytime I go into the town centre but have not seen it. Maybe Toby will know as he works opposite where it liked to roost. Toby, would you like to tell the boys and girls about your new budgie? :-)

Had a cracking day yesterday. We went up Strathconon and had 2 pairs of goosander on the river, swallows, sand martins, wheatears and the place was heaving with willow warblers. On the way back we had a golden eagle being mobbed by a raven. In the evening went to stay with friends who stay way...

There were c.20 waxwings in Fortrose today. Park at the car park by the fire station and look for the large tree next to the car park, the birds were easy to see.

Went to Chanonry Point today for a looksee. There was a flock of about 150 dunlin on the shore (the largest flock I have seen there) but I didnt get a proper look as some numpty let her dog run amongst the birds. Grrrrrrrrrrr! The birds were still flying 10 minutes later as there were several...

Last week myself and two friends went to see the Bittern at Inch Marshes but we dipped. I did however catch the bug that my mate was harbouring. I've been in all week with a hacking great cough and feeling very sorry for myself. Yesterday, to stave off cabin fever, I walked, well OK shuffled...

Today on the River Ness in the middle of town was a dipper, lots of goldeneyes, several red-breasted mergansers, a fly over of 4 whooper swans and an otter fishing away quite happily oblivious to the small crowd of appreciative people that stopped to look.

Went back along the disused railway today at Avoch. There were at least 50+ yellowhammers in the fields along with numerous chaffinches and goldfinches. I only saw one Brambling but the flock is mobile so there might be more. I had a woodcock fly off from under my feet in the woods and on the...

Went for a walk today along the old railway line between Avoch and Fortrose on the Black Isle. There were lots of winter thrushes around and many skeins of geese flying overhead but the real find was a large flock of finches. There were 20-30 yellowhammers, lots of chaffinches and best of all at...

Yesterday I was birding near the Aird and I had a jay fly over, thats 2 in 2 months! They are becoming positively common. A little later on near the Writers Centre I disturbed a bird at dusk by the road. It flew a short distance away and landed on the road verge. I grabbed my bins and found I...

Marcus, the trees are about 5 metres high. I was standing about 10 metres away from the tree as swathes of waxwings flew in. It was quite an impressive sight. Hope you get some good pictures. Also had very large flocks of fieldfares around the Munlochy area but they are a bit more mobile.

Hi Gordon, This past Winter bullfinches were seen most days in Muir of Ord and turnstones are frequently seen along the shore at Avoch. Cant help with the SEO's I'm afraid.

I swithered about getting The Birds of Scotland but eventually did and I am so glad I splashed out on the book. Its the sort of tome that you go back to again and again. I believe that they are running out of stock so if anyone is thinking of going for it then dont put it off or you may miss...

If anybody is near Inverness (Marcus?) then there is currently an otter showing well under the bridge over the River Ness on Bridge Street. Despite being in the city centre it is showing no fear at all. I saw it at 4.55pm and I put my mate onto it and it was still feeding at 5.30pm. People are...

Erm, tomorrow, if the weather is OK I was thinking of driving up Strathconon to look for eagles. Could you please stay well away from there Marcus as driving along icy, single-track whilst looking for birds is dangerous enough without also having Landies pirouetting towards me. Cheers mate, much...

Up here in Muir of Ord its is very busy. Got some more bird food in today and had 25 greenfinches, a dozen chaffinches, 3 bramblings, 15 woodpigeons and assorted gulls, corvids and thrushes all trying to get a piece of the action. Around the village red kite, G.S. woodpeckers and bullfinches are...

Headed back via Tesco in Inverness and there is a pretty good Starling roost that I will come back to photograph on a quieter day. Yeah, right! Good luck with that Marcus! Tesco's, especially at this time of year wont be quiet until about, oh, late January. I have often seen the roost but never...

Welcome to this neck of the woods Marcus! I walked over the Ness a few weeks ago and some guys passed me saying 'that must be a female diver' I got all excited until a female red-breasted merg popped up! I havent seen any waxwings this year but I did disturb a party of bullfinches in my garden...
