Super Black Grouse lek near Loch Garten this morning, a tough choice to walk away from the Caper watch but you take your chances! Poorhouse wood held loads of Crossbill, some with a faster alarm-like call I haven't heard before but couldn't set eyes on them other than brief flight views...

Glorious day today. The female Harlequin was showing nicely on the sea south of Brora along with a few Razorbill, GoldenEye and a Red-throated Diver. I had planned some forest birding, but with almost optimum conditions I instead went to Findhorn. This paid off- a pair of Golden Eagle down the...

Yes,that's my plan. Anagach will be a late morning walk. I'm quite happy to 'miss' species; if I go to Garten and don't see Caper, so be it! I spoke to a friend about dogs and photographers doing more than just disturbing capers up here. Real shame, the birds come first. Jim.

Up for my now annual trip to the Highlands tomorrow for a few days. Various bits planned, would be interested to know of any Eagles up findhorn as always. What about this Harlequin off Brora, anyone been? Edit- whereabouts can I park for Anagach woods? Been meaning to check this place out...

Sorry to hear about that Gordon. At least no-one is hurt. You've managed some good stuff despite that. Now I have a clearer idea of the scale of the place and where to look, I feel well informed for a return visit in the near future. Cheers, Jim.

With a bright start we hiked up Cairngorm and I can now confirm that Ptarmigan do exist. At least 3 birds seen on the rocky slopes, usually bordering snow. It was a pleasure to spend some time with these birds in their domain. Spent the rest of the day walking woods and scanning hills and...

Thanks for the correction, John. More Mountain Hare today! However, tough day in Abernethy today. A few Crested Tit and Crossbill species over, Osprey, and a superb Red Deer stag complete with Harem. Very windy day and conditions ever-changing. The forest floor though is something to behold...

Decent day today exploring Findhorn Valley and Farr Road. 5 Slavonian Grebes in summer plumage on Loch Ruthven, a more than pleasant change to seeing this species in drab winter plumage in East Anglia! Common Buzzards, Peregrine, Red Kite, possible Merlin and Kestrel were our haul of Raptors...

Quick report after day one up here. American Coot at Loch Flemington this morning. Probably the easiest, 'rarest' bird I have ever seen! At Burghead in the afternoon, no sign of the White-Billed Diver but we did enjoy good views of Great Northern and Red-throated looking stunning. 4...

Thanks guys, food for thought. I'll probably post again before I go, and will certainly pop any sightings of note right here. Cheers, Jim.

Hi Gordon, Thanks for your reply. I had these places in mind so good to have them confirmed by someone who knows the area. There is a copy of your book (albeit not the most recent version) in the family so I am expecting that to be delivered this weekend. Cheers, Jim.

Hello, I am staying with a friend in Inverness from 10th to 14th of April. I'm keen to catch up with the Scottish specialities, in particular Scottish Crossbill, Golden Eagle, Caper, Crestie. I appreciate these are sensitive species so would not expect any exact locations on a public forum, but...
