Before we started going to the Outer Hebrides we used to go to Skye and then Mull. Always crossed from Lochaline and stayed at Strontian a couple of times .Now the Lochboisdale ferry goes to Mallaig and not Oban will no doubt visit again. Regards Roger

Two other Birders and I spent several hours at Strontian on May 19 and we didn't even find any Mallards let alone the Black Duck. We searched everywhere including several times where a local told us he had seen it early morning. The lady from the house across the bridge from the church told us...

Thanks for all your advice. Hope it stays a few weeks longer until I come back from North Uist. A Birder I know we ll told me he was fairly sure he saw a Hawfinch yesterday near the gliding club at Feshiebridge. I didn't know they were this far north. Anyone know if they are. Regards Roger

    The Highlands and Islands Thread

Hope this is the right thread for advice on where to look for the Black Duck at Strontian. We return from the Uists on 19 May and the ferry now docks at Mallaig. We thought about a detour to Strontian to look for the Black Duck. Any advice as to the best places to look for it would be very...

I haven't been for several years but I was always surprised at how many cars were in the car park when I used to arrive about 5.15. My advice would be to get there as early as you can but it is a long drive from Sky. I leave Aviemore on the 6 May to drive to Sky and it is not a fast road. Best...

Corncrakes are more difficult to see in June with the vegetation higher but the one behind the visitors centre at Balranald is probably easier than most. I am sure you will enjoy the day though and perhaps go a bit longer in future. Regards Roger

A friend of mine found a few Crossbills in the plantations just past the glider club at Feshiebridge. It wasn't clear from his photos though whether or not they were Scottish. Roger

I saw this bird from the car earlier in May and I was disgusted to read the comments from jpoyner. If you were a Birder then you would not need to get out of your car to get crippling views. The people who went in to the wood are not Birders and they give true Birders a bad name. When I left...

Hi John I should have said it is about halfway from the Farr road turnoff and the end of the valley road. I have never watched from there before but when I drove by there was a Birder parked looking through his scope. I stopped and asked him if he had had any luck and he said he had seen...

We saw a Golden Eagle from the parking area at the end of the road up the Findhorn Valley on 6 May. However about half way up there is a pull in on the right with room for three cars off the road. From there we had fantastic views first of a Golden Eagle then we saw a White-tailed Eagle being...

I fully agree with the above two posts. However if you drive past the site for the RNPs you will wonder who apart from gossyposts doesn't know where to see them. Roger
